Mac screensaver slideshow photos rotated sideways

After the upgrade to Monterrey/OS12 on my iMac, the photos in the screensaver slideshow started showing up sideways and upside down. I've been running this exact same screensaver slideshow for years with no problem. But now, random photos are showing up sideways or upside down, even though the image in the folder is right-side up. I'm seeing a rotated photo about every couple of minutes. This problem started after the upgrade.

The folder containing the photos was created in the mac Photos app and contains over 25,000 images.

Help! Thanks.

Hey TLbronx,

Thanks for the update. This isolated the issue to the Photos album. One option is to try and repair the photo library. You can also try creating a new photo library and import the photos there, and use that library instead. You also have the option of moving all the photos to the folder and keeping the photos there.

"To get to the Photos Repair Library tool on your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. If Photos is open, close the app. Then, while you click to open Photos, hold down the Command and Option keys at the same time.
  2. In the window that opens, click Repair to start the repair process. You might be asked to enter your user account password."

Hey TLbronx,

First, we'd recommend reviewing the information in this article to help ensure your screensaver settings are set up as expected: Use a screen saver on your Mac - Apple Support (IE)

"Customise the screen saver on your Mac

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Screen Saver  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click a screen saver thumbnail on the right, click Options, then adjust the settings.
  3. The options available vary depending on the screen saver you select.
  • Source: Click the pop-up menu, then choose the pictures to show in the screen saver. You can use pictures that come with macOS or choose pictures from a folder or your Photo Library.
    • The top thumbnail shows how the screen saver will look. To check how the screen saver looks full screen, click Preview. To stop the screen saver and return to the settings, move the pointer.
    • Shuffle slide order: Show pictures in a random order instead of their order in the source.
    • Other screen saver options: Set options for colour, speed and more.
  1. Click OK.
  2. To show the time in the screen saver, turn on “Show with clock”."

If that doesn't help, we'd recommend testing to see if the issue occurs in safe mode as that will help isolate the issue further. This article explains how: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

"Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Start up your Intel-based Mac in safe mode

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
  2. Log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again.
  4. On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar."

Thanks!

TLbronx,

That is correct. What we'd like to have you do is export some of the edited images, no need to do this with all 25,000 as we're only using this as a test. Then create a folder with them and select that folder as the source for your screensaver. Then let us know whether the situation is persisting. And to 'export' you really just need to drag them out of the Photos app to the folder. This way a copy remains in Photos and a copy now resides in the newly created folder.

Thanks.

If I understand correctly what is happening, this is a well known issue and reproducible issue.

The screensaver, in Ventura and (I believe) also in Monterey, took to use the original images, rather than the versions you edited inside Photos.

So photos that have not been edited show exactly as they do in Photos, but photos that were edited (could be rotated, cropped, or have had color adjustments, for example) only show the original version.

If, as I suspect, these are images that somehow did not have the correct orientation, and were "fixed" in Photos, there you have it.

Hey TLbronx,

Thanks for the update. One thing you can try is to create a new folder with some of your screensaver photos in it to test. Go to System Settings > Screen Saver, click on a slideshow screen saver (such as Classic), click Options…, click the Source pop-up menu, click Choose Folder…, select the folder containing the exported photos, and click Choose.

Keep us posted.

OK... took me a little while to get organized to set up the test.

Answer is: when I do it your way (point the screensaver to a folder and not an album in Photos app), the photos ALL display correctly -- that is, right-side up.

Did exactly as you suggested -- Created an empty folder on Desktop, then copied appx 2000 images from the album in Mac Photos.app to the new folder, INCLUDING many photos that appeared sideways on the Mac screensaver (even though they are right side up in the Photos album). Then pointed the screensaver to that new folder and let the slideshow run for several hours. Voilà! the screensaver slideshow displayings correctly.

What does this mean? What is the fix? Other than copying all 25K photos to a folder (which will means using up 2X the amount of storage on my computer), which would not be a good fix.

Thank you.

Thanks for the info/reply.

But unfortunately did not solve. Confirmed that screensaver was set up with correct settings. Tried safe mode -- screensaver would not load at all in safe mode. Just a black screen with the time clock. Gave it about an hour and still wouldn't come on.

Restarted in normal mode. Screensaver came on at the designated time and random photos are sideways again. About 1-2 photos sideways every 10 min. And those photos are right-side up when I check in the album in mac photos app.

Thanks so much.... any other ideas?

uh-oh! Does this mean there is no solution? Obviously we edit the images in Photos (for orientation, cropping, etc) before displaying them in the screensaver slideshow.

I cannot say for sure that all the photos we are seeing sideways or upside down are photos that were once edited. In fact, I think that the ones that are appearing upside down were never upside-down originally. I just don't know whether or not the sideways ones were once sideways and subsequently edited to correct orientation. I don't think they all were, but can't be sure. Also, I'm seeing the same photo appearing in the screensaver slideshow right-side up sometimes and other times sideways.... but, again, can't be sure it's the same image or two separate photos of the same scene/people.
