Apple Watch 8 - kickboard lengths swimming

Hi, I’m new to the Apple Watch and have just got the series 8.

I swim most days so tracking during swim sessions is the most important feature I need out of it.

On my first swim with it, it was perfect! I was so impressed as it even counted accurately my kickboard lengths.

However every session since it only counts them intermittently. I aim for 40 kickboard lengths in a swim so it’s not just a few lengths missed.

Now no watch I’ve worn in the past has counted them so I could understand if it didn’t at all but the fact that it can count them and has sometimes makes me want it to do it all the time so I don’t still have to count them in my head. Also my calories are incorrectly counted due to the missing lengths. (When it’s then linked to swimtag it adds in the extra calories to my move cal but not active cal)

Does anyone have any insights into how it counts kickboard lengths?

If by arm movements then my movement is no different on the ones it counts and the ones it doesn’t.

Greetings Loulucca,

Have you been able to verify if your Apple Watch is counting them as a different stroke? Swim with your Apple Watch

View splits and sets
1. On your iPhone, open the Fitness app.
2. Tap Show More next to Workouts.
3. Tap the workout that you want to view.

The Pool Swim workout automatically tracks your splits and auto sets, while the Open Water Swim workout only tracks splits. Splits are your total workout time divided by distance. Auto sets show your rest and swim time separately.2 Your can view the type of strokes you performed during your swim, which can include:
• Backstroke
• Breaststroke
• Butterfly
• Freestyle
• Kickboard
• Mixed

You can also tap Show More next to Auto Sets to track your SWOLF score for each set, a metric commonly used by swimmers to track efficiency.

Thanks.

Hey Loulucca,

Thanks for the additional information. Take a look at the steps here to help increase the accuracy of your Apple Watch: Get the most accurate measurements using your Apple Watch - Apple Support. If you're still having trouble with the Apple Watch tracking accurately after following those steps, make sure that both the iPhone and Apple Watch are updated correctly.

Hi! Many thanks for your reply.

yes I can see it is recognising the different strokes which is why I wonder how it works and why it won’t recognise all kickboard lengths.

I can see in the pool that my length and distance doesn’t change for a few lengths then in the splits and sets it will say 400m kickboard, when I’ve actually done 1000m of it.

In the timings it will say some lengths took a minute and a half when in reality I did 3 or 4 in that time.

As I say I’m not doing anything different in the ones it does read correctly and the ones it skips.

I will watch it stay at the same metre distance and length count not moving at all for a few lengths of kick board. Then randomly (even though there has been no change in my stroke) it will add 25m and a length on.
