Photos App - photo appears in ‘Places’ but not in ‘All Photos’

How can it happen that a photo can appear under Places but not under All Photos?

I notice an option for such a photo whereby you can select ‘Show in All Photos’. I can’t find an explanation for this option anywhere. It is the same on Mac, iPhone and iPad. The photos are from a year ago so are not recent. Very weird. No filters are applied as far as I can see.

Thanks for your help.

That makes sense. However, I tried clicking on it as per Old Toad and Richard Taylor's suggestion, and it brought up 'All Photos' with the image showing (and also others from the same day). So problem solved, although it does not explain why they didn't show up in the first place, and leaves a nagging doubt that there may be other images that are hanging in 'Places' or elsewhere but not in All Photos.

So-- what happens when you right-click on that "missing" photo in Places and ask to show it in All Photos as OT suggested? Does it not appear? What pictures is it around, if it does? Sometimes the order that pictures appear in Library "All Photos" is unexpected, maybe because the file date isn't the "created date" or some other weirdness. But you are right-- it's bound to be there, somewhere.

The "Show in All Photos" command does not control whether a given item is visible in All Photos or not. It just helps you locate that item inside All Photos. It is just a shortcut for "remember the date and time of the photo, switch to the All Photos view, scroll forward/backward to that date and time, select the same photo." It can be quite helpful in a large library.

Hi Old Toad

thanks for replying.

yes, that’s exactly the situation. What I can’t understand is how that happens. ‘All Photos’ should mean exactly that shouldn’t it? It’s a bit disconcerting when a photo is not in the main library. It is not just one. There were a whole batch of them from the same day and place. I imagine if I select the option then it will appear as you indicate.

Yes that is a possibility. There are certainly some photos that have an incorrect date on them for some reason, although we have now ascertained that the images in question do have the correct date. As these images are working OK, I think it best to close this post and open another one if I can't work out the date issue. Thanks for all your help.
