iPad - incessant prompt to enter passcode to start backup

As the title states 'an incessant prompt!' When my iPad has been idle (sometimes in a very short time), a prompt will suddenly appear showing a white login screen and asking for the passcode to 'start a backup'.

I do not want to start a backup; I do not want any backups. My iPad settings currently show 'iCloud Backup' as off.

How do I get rid of this annoyance?

Thanks

Checked iCloud storage => plenty of space available

Checked iPad storage => plenty of space available

Checked 3rd party apps trying to use iCloud as backup => no apps were doing this

I contacted Apple Support.

The screen prompt was in fact for my iPad passcode. It was being caused by the 3rd party app iMazing on my Mac which is used to perform local backups via the LAN (device to Mac). I contacted iMazing support who confirmed that 'this is a new security feature introduced in iOS 16.1 and iOS 15.7.1 that is designed to prevent unauthorized access to the device, mainly through Wi-Fi backups on trusted computers. The same prompt happens when backing up the device via Finder or iTunes.'

They also confirmed that 'this feature can't be turned off at the moment by Apple design but, hopefully, Apple will add a switch for it in the future. You can send the feature request to Apple on this website: Product Feedback - Apple.'

I have included this information in case anyone else is having this problem.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Hey TheWishfulOne,

Thanks for getting back to us. Have you used iCloud backup or iTunes/Finder at all before? Even though you have it turned off, double check your storage:

Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

What's the difference between device storage and iCloud storage? - Apple Support

How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support

  1. "Go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage. You might see a list of recommendations for optimizing your device's storage, followed by a list of installed apps and the amount of storage each one uses.
  2. Tap an app's name for more information about its storage. Cached data and temporary data might not be counted as usage."

You may want to check to see if there is any third party app trying to use your iCloud as a backup, this may be why it keeps appearing.

If this still doesn't help, contact Apple Support.

Cheers!
