Screen Time

My screen time on my MacBook isn't working. It keeps stating that I've been using my MacBook all night and its honestly very frustrating. I've kept my MacBook up to date and turned off my screen time off for a period of time. I make sure to turn it off every night (i don't completely shut it down), and I have unlinked my screen time from my phone and MacBook since I got it.

Hi a14-7,

In the Battery System Preferences window, are you able to select "Power Adapter" and see an option for "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping when the display if off"? If so and that is enabled, your Mac will continue to operate even with the display closed or dark if connected to power.

Also, were you able to test the impact of restarting your Mac to check for differences as requested?

If the behaviors continue and the mentioned options aren't helping, the next step would be to test in safe mode. How to use safe mode on your Mac outlines not only how to test a behavior in safe mode but also the appropriate next steps depending on the results.

Regards.

Hello a14-7,

Let's double check to make sure that the options below are enabled or disabled:

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Battery  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click Options on the right, then do any of the following:
• Put hard disks to sleep: Turn on “Put hard disks to sleep when possible.”
• Update your system while it’s asleep: Click the pop-up menu next to Disable Power Nap.
See What is Power Nap?
• Allow your Mac to wake briefly so users can access shared services (if applicable): Click the pop-up menu next to “Wake for network access,” then choose an option.
See Share your Mac resources when it’s in sleep.

This resource also has more details on those features: Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac - Apple Support Adjusting those settings should help to minimize any unexpected power usage while your Mac is asleep.

Should that behavior still persist, does restarting your Mac have any impact on that behavior, even if only temporarily? Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Restart.

Let us know your results, and we'll keep moving forward from there.

a14-7, if you’re unable to locate that option in System Preferences, that indicates that there may have been some type of issue when you updated/upgraded your MacBook Air. To resolve this, we recommend reinstalling macOS. This may also resolve the Screen Time issue you’re having as well.

Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support -- Before you reinstall macOS, please make sure you have a recent backup.

How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support -- These are the steps to reinstall.

Once the process is finished, see if the setting that was missing is there again and test Screen Time to see if that’s also resolved.

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.
