SMB File Sharing not working in Ventura

I use the SMB file sharing system to access files on my MBPro from my iPhone 12, on my local network. Until now, this has been robust, reliable and fast.

After updating my MBPro to Ventura 13.0 and my iPhone to iOS 16.1 I cannot connect the laptop to the phone or to my old iMac, running Monterey 12.6.

Connections between the old iMac and the iPhone work just fine.

Settings on the MBPro show that file sharing is enabled, but it is clearly not working. Any ideas on how to fix this? I have tried all the usual stuff, rebooting, toggling the controls off and on, etc., to no avail.

The working solution for me

Add

/usr/sbin/smbd

with Settings -> Network -> Firewall -> Options

Or

sudo /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/socketfilterfw --add /usr/sbin/smbd
sudo /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/socketfilterfw --unblockapp /usr/sbin/smbd

Interesting is that this reqiured even if Sharing is visible as allowed in firewall.

I'd like to believe that they're hard at work on a solution right now, but the reality is (and history has shown) that they prioritize security over functionality 9 times out of 10, and this issue will most likely fall back in priority until it becomes a big enough problem for them. I highly encourage everyone on this thread to submit bug reports, otherwise we won't see a fix for a few OS updates. People need to call in and complain, and escalate this issue to the highest possible technical support channel. I know it's a pain in the ***, and the reps will waste your time doing mundane troubleshooting, but this is the only way it will get their attention.

I am so glad I found this discussion thread, I have been going insane for two weeks now trying to figure out why I can't maintain connectivity to shared folders on one of my Mac minis that I am using like a file server and storage. Stopping and starting file sharing, or rebooting the Mini brings back operation some times for a few hours sometimes for a few minutes. Clearly there is a huge problem with SMB in Ventura!!!! I will open another support case because so far I've been instructed to reinstall the OS which I did to no effect, and the next instruction from Apple support was to completely wipe the mini and start over which seems like an extreme piece of advise for a network file sharing issue where it just seems like smb stops responding.

This issue needs attention, Apple!

Has anyone tried this?

From:

https://mjtsai.com/blog/2022/12/30/fixing-smb-file-sharing-in-ventura/

“When migrating from an earlier macOS to Big Sur & newer, this key in:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.smb.server.plist, gets migrated:

<key>LocalKerberosRealm</key>

<string>LKDC:SHA1.xxxxxxxx</string>

Apparently Net Auth gets "confused" by the Kerberos Realm and hangs.

Delete:

com.apple.smb.server.plist (you'll need to authenticate), then restart, com.apple.smb.server.plist gets created & properly populated without a Kerberos Realm.

After doing that the Synology no longer spontaneously dismounts or fails to mount, plus File Sharing on the fixed Macs works.”

I can attempt this later today and report back. Soon as I get another window of time to do free beta testing for a buggy OS !!

This is the wrong thread for your issue. You are describing connecting to other shares.

This thread is for Ventura file sharing not working.

FWIW: I tried this "fix" and it had no effect on the problem described here.

ALL: Please also start a tech support request with Apple on SMB File Sharing being broken in Ventura. Apple DOES refer these issues to Engineering, and the more complaints the higher the visibility.

Thanks. I just want to be sure about how my situation differs from this thread as you suggested... I have a Mac running Ventura with File Sharing on. It has numerous volumes mounted, internal and external. No matter which volumes I manually add to File Sharing I cannot connect to any of them. Some of the suggestions made early in this thread - turning off/on, rebooting and even changing the custom icon on the volume - did enable connections but only briefly. Are you saying that, because I'm discussing attached volumes this is not the same issue? I ask because when I get Apple on the phone later I don't want to misrepresent.

No the support advisor DID NOT tell me to download Batchmod. This is a software used to reset permissions on specific folder directories. I took it upon myself to try this method. I am using Batchmod Version 1.7b5 (175).

I can't remember where I downloaded it from but I've had it on my computer for a while. I'm pretty sure there is a free version you can download.

Did I literally not just state in the post DIRECTLY above yours that the Apple advisor didn't instruct to use Batchmod?

Might be a lousy fix, but it's a fix. What's lousy is the crappy OS updates Apple keeps putting out. I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue for over 40 hours, I'm just telling you guys what's worked for me. I know this isn't a scalable solution, but at least it will get me to the next update. There are obvious concerns with running my machines with network firewall off, and resetting root permissions on folders.

But if you guys come up with a better solution please let me know
