"Correct spelling automatically" isn't working in the macOS Notes app

"Correct spelling automatically" isn't working in the macOS Notes app. 

For illustration, the screenshot below shows me right-clicking on a Note with the misspelled words: cahrger, cantelouppe, and glasss. The "Correct spelling automatically" setting is checked.

These three words could be any misspelled words, because the Notes app isn't auto-correcting ANY words. 

Restarting the app and the Mac doesn’t resolve. And my Mac is running the latest OS (Ventura 13.0)
