Apple Watch Ultra locking while on wrist

Because you have said you have used other Apple Watches without issue I doubt what I am about to say will apply to you.

The symptoms you describe are a common problem for people who have tattoos on the area the watch touches.

It can also be an issue if you have a lot of arm hair.

Mines been doing it since I got it too. Never had any issues with 2 previous versions of Apple Watch. Makes it pretty much unusable for tracking activities especially swimming. Sounds to me like some may have defective sensors?

Question: Do you by chance have tattoos on your wrist?

I didn’t know about problems with tattoos and Apple Watch otherwise I wouldn’t have purchased one. The locking and it not counting my steps and my workout is driving me mad. I wear my watch on my left wrist where tattoos are but I definitely can’t change to my right wrist that would not work.

I have too. From the day I bought it it locks. But my daughters is not a problem. Her watch will move loosely around her wrist and not lock, if mine has the slightest bit of movement it locks. Really annoys me. Also Bought from different retailers.

It’s not because of the tattoos! I know a ton of people that are having the same problem that have zero tattoos. It’s always a different answer when you talk to someone at Apple. I’ve owned several watches from Apple, and never had this problem. You would think when they put out a new watch even if there is a problem they could figure it out. I had my watch for a week (bought it at the Apple Store) they told me I could replace it with a refurbished one. Yeah, like I want a refurbished watch to replace my brand new full price watch. Hopefully they can get this figured out and quit making up excuses!

If the watch is less than 14 days old and you bought it from Apple, you can return it for a refund and buy a new one. Don't go through the Genius Bar. Just bring back all of your packaging and your receipt and return it.

no Tattoos.... my previous watch never had this issue. Only when I upgraded to Series8. And after 10 days of trying to figure it all out... visiting the Apple Store... they ended up replacing it. The new one does the same.... I'm just tired of fighting it.

Nope. Not loose. It is snug. Not close enough to my hand that it would lock it. And I don't sleep with the watch. I have shifted it up a bit and that doesn't seem to help because it will slide down. Wearing it on the other hand... yea tried that, it is better but........ ridiculous that I can't wear the watch on my preferred arm because it keeps locking. I will say that the watch (series4 did it too) is causing marks on my wrist. Not a band issue. Directly below the watch. The detection eye is causing a "bruise" on my wrist. It goes away after a couple days, yet it should not be happening. That must have something to do with it. I showed it to my friend and she was surprised because I don't know how this could be happening.

My series 8 is doing the same thing. Mine will even lock when am scrolling through it. It locks when am wearing during a workout. It’s annoying. I have had Apple Watches since the first one, always wore the on the same wrist, on the same way but this is the first time I’ve had an issue.

I solved it by turning off the passcode 😂. But I need a resolution because I prefer it locked.

If the poster to whom you replied has tattoos, it could well be that that is the root cause of their problem. Tattoos are a known issue for this type of device (not just Apple's). That doesn't mean that it is the only possible cause.

Yes!! My ultra watch locks up every 10 seconds. Tech support with apple walked through every step still no resolution—- sent it off twice only to get “can not duplicate” —- although every time I get it back out it on my wrist it does same thing! Yes band is tight, wrist Detection is enabled —- completely frustrated and my watch is only 7 months old. Don’t understand why they won’t just replace my watch??

Nothing. Some people put stickers but then you block the sensors. Apple is completely either in denial or just flat out not helpful and have thrown their hands up. The answer is either don’t buy one or remove your tattoos. If you can still return yours I would. Get a regular one. They don’t have the issue as badly
