My F11 and F12 no longer control volume after the recent upgrade. Any ideas?

How can I get my mini keyboard F11/F12 keys to control volume again? I have tried the instructions for checking and unchecking the fn box in Keyboard area. I tried restarting. Nothing works, F11 seems to shrink screen a tad bit when I toggle. No volume control.
