Preview doesn't seem to recognize me as Administrator.

When I open new pictures in Preview, whether copied and command-N or downloaded Save As, sometimes they are locked, sometimes not. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's jpg, png or webp. Sometimes clicking on Get Info, unlocking, and giving permission to everyone works, sometimes it doesn't. Can't discern any pattern to it.

AmericanadianTO,

Thanks for checking your account settings for your user, that’s helpful to know. When the files get downloaded/saved from their original source are they all going to the same folder, such as the Downloads folder or a folder designated by your web browser/mail client etc?

Have you recently changed any read or write permissions in the home folder or Library to assist with other issues? We ask that because sometimes changing those can impact more than just the intended target.

Another thing we can do to isolate, is check this in a test user on your Mac. Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Let us know what you find.

AmericanadianTO,

In System Preferences > Users and Groups are any of the users listed as Admin? If so, can you log in to that user and change your user to an admin? Here's how to do that - Change Users & Groups settings on Mac

As for changing your user name, here's how to do that - Change the name of your macOS user account and home folder Prior to making any changes to that though, please be sure you make a backup as,

Doing this incorrectly could damage your account and prevent you from logging in with that account. Make sure that you have a backup before continuing. These steps do not change or reset the password of your user account.

Thanks.

Hi AmericanadianTO,

To aid us in better isolating this issue, can you confirm the following?

  • Are these photos that were shared with you from someone else, or originally from a different computer?
  • Are you able to replicate the issue with specific photos consistently, or does it seem random?
  • Do you see "Admin" under your account name in account under System Preferences > Users & Groups
  • Are these photos you're attempting to share with others when you notice the issue?

Let us know and we'll continue from there.

Cheers!

No, they aren't going to the same folder, I have it set to ask.

I recently wiped and reinstalled Monterey. I upgraded to Ventura yesterday and it's still happening.

I'll have to get back to you about testing on another user and setting it up as admin since it's intermittent.

I suspect it has something about me not being listed as administrator in the file info.

Siri stopped working yesterday until I restarted. Don't know if that's related, but it's one of the reasons I reinstalled Monterey — I brought problems over when I initially migrated from the old computer. The picture problem doesn't happen in that one (mid-2012 Catalina).
