Poor Night Mode Photos

My problem is not turning Night Mode on or off. I want it on for dark scene situations but I want it to take pictures with true brightness. My experience with Night Mode is that on every shot the shutter stays open TOO long leading to a pic that is arguably bright but way too light, leading to an inaccurate brightness compared to the actual scene. Turning Night Mode off results in no picture at all. I want to see either the iphone more accurately adjust shutter time to true scene brightness or to at least allow the user to adjust shutter time to achieve the brightness they desire. The scaling is already there with that useless Auto/Max thing so why not let the user quickly and easily manipulate it to their desired shutter time? For what I use iPhone this by far my biggest issue as it is my primary camera for everything pic.
