iOS - Google Search Window Disappears Behind Safari Address Bar

After the latest iOS update version 16.1 (20B82), when I use Safari to access Google, as soon as I tap into the search window, the search window disappears behind the Safari address bar at the top of the screen, so I can’t see what I’m typing. Seems like a bug, because it did not use to do this. Is any one else having this problem?

I think I found a fix for this. Go to Settings->Safari and scroll to the bottom where see “page zoom”. Mine shows setting for Page Zoom on “google” and seprste settings for “other websites”. Google was set to 115%, I change this to 100% and problem solved.

Note I am unsure why it showed Google as a separate option from all other sites, possibly because I was on that site when I went to settings.

The advisor was wrong. My wife and I have the same model iPhone 14 Pro, withe the exact same iOS version, and we both have the exact same problem. Here is a work-around that I have found so far...

  1. Tap the Safari icon.
  2. Open Google.
  3. Tap in the search window.
  4. Pull the sheen downward, and the hidden search window appears again.

Now you can type your search words, without it disappearing.

Still, this is not how it used to work, but at least it's only a couple extra taps. I will contact Apple as well.

Hey Y’all;

This issue is maddening, huh?

So, I’m back to post another “Fix” ( in quotes b/c its not really a good fix):

You know how a few ios versions back, they changed safari’s address bar default setting to the bottom of the screen?

Ya, so if you move it back to bottom, then the search window remains visible/usable.

I know- its only a half-*** solution .

And on the topic of it hiding when you type:

on my iphone, as soon as you type a letter in the window, it hides under the address bar at the top- BUT; you can bring it back to visible by pressing & holding the cursor just under the address bar, & pull it back down, where it then remains.

Here’s hoping we get a real solution!

Cheers!

Hi, whydavewhy here... I just spoke to an Apple senior advisor, who told me that Apple is aware of the problem, and they are working on it. They also mentioned the temporary workaround... Settings / Safari / Scroll down to 'Request Desktop Website' / Toggle the 'All Websites' switch to ON. But I will probably just leave the switch off, since in iOS 16.2, you can at least pull down the Google window and type, after it disappears the first time. Hopefully they will have a fix soon.

My iPhone 14 pro does not have landscape bar toggle in safari settings that I could see. Also, changing font size using Aa or in general iPhone display settings didn’t work. I think what is causing the issue for me at least is having my iPhone display zoom settings set to “larger text” rather than “default”. Changing this is the only thing that works for me but I’m not going to keep it that way cause I need the zoomed in setting. For now I’ve found the least annoying way to deal with it is to click the very top of the screen to “scroll up” and reveal the text box.

Hi all.

14 pro.

none of the suggestions worked for me other than draw the search box down and tap search box again to see what i'm typing. Very annoying !

What worked for me was to change the zoom setting for google.

Hope this works for others...

Settings>Safari>Page zoom>Google>100%

mine was set at 115% and search box dissapeared.

as soon as i set it to 100% everything returned to normal 👍🏻

I originally entered this issue on the Apple Support Communities website on Nov. 6, 2022 - iOS Version: 16.1 (20B82). It is now Dec. 6, 2023 - iOS Version: 17.1.2 (21B101), and the problem remains. I have posted about this issue multiple times on the Apple Feedback website, as well. I have also noticed that on both iPhone and Mac, Safari seems to fail to work properly with more websites lately, than at any time since I became an Apple user in 2006. (Windows not filling, links not working, etc.) Each time this happens, I switch to the Google Chrome browser, and it works perfectly. I like to use Safari, due to its privacy protection, but it sure does seem that Apple has not been focused on Safari issues like this for a while.

I followed the advice posted by doce274 on 11/21/2023 and it fixed issue immediately and permanently. Quoting his/her post here:

I fixed this issue finally

go to display and brightness

click on dark mode

Then click on display zoom and enable

The only clarification I would make is that in iOS 17.2.1 in Settings>>Display & Brightness, after you toggle on Dark Mode you click on Display Zoom at the bottom, and then select Larger Text. This fixed the issue for me, even after I switched back to Light mode and Default Text.

Whilst moving the address bar to the bottom was a workaround for my 14 Pro (16.2), I think I also have a workaround for the address bar on the top that seems to work.

Hit the double AA on the left of the address bar and at the top of that page you’ll probably see something like A 100% A. Hit the bigger A on the right till the centre figure goes to 115% then come out and go back to the main Google page. Obviously everything looks slightly larger, but typing into the search box now will hopefully not be hidden at the top. Worked on mine anyway!

Here is another solution, albeit a kludgy one. Once you have the Google search page loaded, try turning your phone 90° to landscape mode. The Google search bar seems to stay unhidden when you type in your search terms. Then rotate back to portrait mode and the search bar with your search terms remains unhidden. Then hit “search” as usual.

Not the best solution, but I find it to be less effort than pulling the page down to unhide the search bar and trying to type into it without having it become hidden again.

That is what was happening to me originally, when I first posted this problem on Nov. 6, 2022; but I was using iOS version 16.1 (20B82). Like you, when I pulled the screen down to see the search window again, and tapped inside it, as soon as I started typing, the search window would disappear behind the Safari address bar. But after I updated to the latest version - iOS version 16.1.2 (20B110) - the search window stayed in place for typing, after I pulled down on the screen. So Apple fixed something related to the problem, but only half-way. I will call them today and post what they tell me.
