iOS - Google Search Window Disappears Behind Safari Address Bar

After the latest iOS update version 16.1 (20B82), when I use Safari to access Google, as soon as I tap into the search window, the search window disappears behind the Safari address bar at the top of the screen, so I can’t see what I’m typing. Seems like a bug, because it did not use to do this. Is any one else having this problem?

I think I found a fix for this. Go to Settings->Safari and scroll to the bottom where see “page zoom”. Mine shows setting for Page Zoom on “google” and seprste settings for “other websites”. Google was set to 115%, I change this to 100% and problem solved.

Note I am unsure why it showed Google as a separate option from all other sites, possibly because I was on that site when I went to settings.

Thanks for the response, but I did already try clearing the Safari website data, and that did not solve the problem. The strange thing is that this problem is only on MY specific iPhone, which means that it is a glitch, not a bug. My wife has the exact same iPhone 14 Pro model, and the exact same iOS version, and when she does a Google search via the SAFARI mobile app, hers works perfectly fine. But when I try to do the same thing on MY iPhone, using Google from the SAFARI app, as soon as I tap the Google Search window, it disappears behind the Safari address bar. (By the way, if I do a Google search directly with the GOOGLE app on my iPhone, that works fine; I am able to see what I am typing in the Search window, as I am typing it.) I can't think of any other troubleshooting to do, other than resetting my iPhone to Factory. The problem is that when I do "Restore from iCloud Backup," (so I won't have to manually re-enter every setting for every app), it will restore the glitch.

Ulin, Wavelengths suggestion worked the best above. Turn JavaScript off. But now I’m not able to get any of the Google news feeds that pop up when you’re typing things into your search bar. Why can’t Apple fix this problem. They created this problem. They must have incompetent people working there. I just don’t get it. THIS ALL HAPPENED EXACTLY WHEN THEY DID THEIR 16.1.1 UPATE. Someone from Apple tried to tell me to contact Google. This is not Googles problem. I’m starting to lose faith in Apple.

I actually spoke to a “senior” adviser who told me that the problem was that my iPhone 13 mini had too small a screen. When I said it was never a problem before plus people on the forum have 14 pro plus model with same problem he then told me it was the pre-populated trending searches pushing the search bar up so I disabled trending searches and still no fix so next answer was that Google must be coding something differently. I said if that’s true why isn’t it happening to everyone. The conversation ended with go in and change your Google settings and good luck so no resolution and no real concern that there wasn’t.

Thats how it “works” for me as well.

Have any of you tried it with an ipad, or Mac?

I have been using my Safari with the Address bar at the bottom- which I don’t like at all, but at least I don’t have to play ‘Hide & Seek’!

I run my Safari font/txt at 115% because I’m old & blind, & I even tried switching that both smaller & larger, hoping the issue is related to font size… of course it had no effect.

Isn’t it “funny” how whenever developers release an update to any software you care to mention, there are always seemingly random changes that simply totally suck!

Same with me. Search bar disappears but since 16.1.2 I can pull it down and it stays down. So, like you, they have fixed half the problem.

interestingly, although maybe not related, I have a similar problem with Facebook. If I click into someone’s profile if fills the screen so I cannot click the back arrow in the top left corner.

it seems like some kind of ‘full screen’ mode issue but whatever it is it is annoying.

I originally posted this bug on 11/6/22… In iOS 16.1 (20B82), when using Safari to access Google, as soon as you tapped into the Google search window, it disappeared behind the Safari address bar at the top of the screen, so you couldn’t see what you were typing. If you pulled the page down, in order to view the Google search window again, it would disappear as soon as you started typing.

On 12/12/22, with iOS update 16.2, the Google search window still disappeared behind the Safari address bar, but now when you pulled the page down to see the search window and started typing, it no longer disappeared.

On 12/16/22, I contacted an Apple Senior Advisor, about the problem, and he told me that Apple was aware of the problem, and that they were working on it.

Today, 1/25/23, I noticed that there was another iOS update… 16.3 (20D47) …so I updated my iPhone 14 Pro, to see if Apple finally fixed the problem. Nope. I was hoping that as Apple users, our being proactive by notifying Apple about the problem, and posting on this site, would help them to identify and fix the issue, by doing whatever they had to do on the Apple end, and also by them getting in touch with Google, if necessary, to make sure that the integration was not failing due to a problem on the Google end. Unfortunately, because this has gone on for so long, I have a feeling that Apple is just waiting for Google to do something.

The original "fix" for this was to put the zoom at something higher than 100%. The reason it seems "fixed" now for you at 100% is because there is no Google Doodle. The Google Doodle is the problem, you'll see it will be back when Google makes the change in a day or two. But neither Google nor Apple will take ownership of the problem, nor do they care.
