My Apple watch can't give me any simple distance measure. Always 0 ft, for walking, cycling, running. How come ?

I use a cheap Garmin and my Apple Watch 7. I can't get the Apple Watch to give me any distance for indoor or outdoor walk, run and when cycling outdoor. It gives me the time and the heart beat, but not the distance. My Garmin gives me everything for half the price: time, distance and maps !

Why can't the Apple Watch measure distances ?

Thanks for these steps. I did follow them all the time. What I missed was a setting: In the Settings app, under Privacy, under Location Services, under System Services, I had to switch on the "Motion Calibration & Distance" flag. Depth of the flag = 4 layers of options to investigate. I had no zero chance of finding the proper flag.

Now I can measure my runs and walks and rides. Now, I need to find a way to transfer them properly to Stava for proper analysis.

Hi Erynvorn,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

With Apple Watch not providing the distance for your walk, run, or cycling for your Apple Watch, make sure that it is running the latest watchOS with the most recent performance updates and restart your iPhone, if you haven't done so already.

You can calibrate Apple Water to improve measurement accuracy.

1. While wearing your Apple Watch, go to a flat, open outdoor area that offers good GPS reception and clear skies.
2. If you have Apple Watch Series 2 or later, you just need your Apple Watch. If you have Apple Watch Series 1 or earlier, bring your iPhone for GPS. Hold your iPhone in your hand, or wear it on an armband or waistband.
3. Open the Workout app. To start, tap Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run. To set a goal before starting, tap the ... icon.
4. Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes.

Find these details and more in Calibrating your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy.

Regards.
