Ipad Stuck in restore mode

I have a 4th gen iPad air (A2072) that is stuck in restore mode,

I have tried:

  • plugging it into iTunes to update which fails saying "Your iPad can't be updated. you must restore it to factory settings.
  • plugging it into iTunes to restore which fails saying the same as if I try to update it
  • following this page's instructions also (If you see the Restore screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support)
  • Force shut down just boots it straight back into restore mode as well as leaving it to die and recharging it.

Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated,

thanks all

JB

You might otherwise seek assistance directly from Apple Support - however, for hands-on help where other approaches are unsuccessful, there is little to beat the expertise and technical help on offer at the Genius Bar.

If you do wish to first try Apple Support, they can be reached using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, if you have access to another Apple device, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

These support pages outline the available methods to restore an iPad - either from a backup, or to Factory Settings - and troubleshooting if required:

Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch from a backup – Apple Support

Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod to factory settings – Apple Support

Restore all content to iPad from a backup - Apple Support

If you can't update or restore your iPad - Apple Support

You’ll need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS).

Download and use iTunes for Windows – Apple Support

Update to the latest version of iTunes – Apple Support

You should note that the most recent version of iTunes for Windows requires use of Windows 10/11.

Use of a PC or Mac computer is unavoidable. If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) will be delighted to assist.
