iPad Pro M1 external display only screen mirror but not giving full screen ratio

Basic screen mirroring should be available to an external TV or connected monitor with iPadOS 16.1. However, Stage Manager support for external monitors is not yet available - this feature being planned for release later this year.

The new Stage Manager feature is available for these models of iPad:

• iPad Air (5th generation)
• iPad Pro 11-inch (all generations)
• iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)

Feature availability is usually limited by system hardware - CPU and available RAM being critical to some advanced functionality.

An external keyboard and trackpad (or mouse) are prerequisite requirements for using Stage Manager with an external monitor.

As such, Stage Manager support for external monitors works as advertised - but only with all requirements met.

Thank you for the question - Yes, there is ONE setting you have to adjust. You need to shut down „Mirror display“ and then the magic happens. I had the same issue and discovered this hint by watching a few youtube clips - interesting that no one (In the sources I checked) mentioned this 100% Key to success… 🤷🏻‍♂️… but it works. No, you don’t need a Magic Keyboard and a mouse, but you need to connect (any) bluetooth keyboard to allow the function to work.

AKA:

1. M1 Ipad
2. USB C
3. External Keyboard
4. Adjusted settings to NOT MIRROR (see the screenshot)
5. Active stage manager

You need to disable „Mirror display“, afterwards you will have the "external display" option instantly. (This is just how to enable it, nothing about the resolution or screen-size.)

Screen Mirroring will, by definition, attempt to maintain the screen aspect ratio of the iPad.

As such, unless you monitor attempts to “stretch” the image the image to fill the display (which will distort the relative vertical to horizontal dimensions of the display), you will see dark bands to the sides and perhaps also top and bottom of the viewable monitor screen.

When I connect my iPad Pro (4th generation with the M1) to an external monitor (an LG TV), it will only mirror. I want it to extend the display instead of mirroring. Any help for this?

So, are you saying that currently full screen external monitor support is only available in the beta developer versions of ipadOS and not the consumer release?

Currently, the production version of Stage Manager does not support external monitors.

So when can we expect the production version of stage manager with external TV support to be added to the iPad ?

I’ve realised that the external display can’t handle a resolution of 3440x 1440. I’ve got a 34” Samsung monitor and it only pumps out 2560x1440. Any solution to this?
