I'm unsure what is the difference between downloading from Apple Music (monthly service) and from I tunes (per download fee). I'm asking because it seems that Apple Music is DRM doesn't apply to music downloaded from Itunes. And when it's in the library, how does one know which track came from where?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

That is correct. Downloads from the iTunes Store have been non-DRM since 2009. But tracks from the Apple Music streaming service have DRM.

If you have your library (or playlist) in Songs view, look at the Kind column. Downloads from the iTunes Store will say ""purchased AAC audio file."
