Apple Mail doesn't work with icloud.com address

About 90 days ago, I changed my Apple ID from a yahoo.com.au address to my icloud.com address. I'd never used Apple Mail before, so I thought I'd give it a whirl, but much to my frustration, I can't get it connect.

When I turn on connection logging, the log file has the name imap.mail.yahoo.com[deleted].txt, and the diagnostics inside seem to suggest that I'm trying to connect to imap.mail.yahoo.com using my new icloud.com address! This is happening even though I've deleted the old yahoo.com.au address from my accounts. See attached screenshots of the 'Internet Accounts' window of 'System Preferences' and 'Mail' - 'Preferences' - 'Accounts'.

Is there anyplace else that the old yahoo.com[.au] address might be lurking that I need to delete?

Thanks.

Hallelujah! The answer is indeed as simple as I thought in my previous post—signing out, rebooting, and then signing back in has fixed the problem! I can now use Apple Mail with my icloud.com account.

Perhaps that should be noted somewhere—that after users have changed their Apple ID, they should sign out of the device, reboot, and then sign back in.

Hi alpha6019,

We apologize that we weren’t specific enough. We’d like to make sure you’re able to sign into iCloud Mail via a web browser: iCloud.com

If you are, review the information on this page of the iCloud User Guide to make sure you’ve set up the account and added it to your Mac correctly: Set up iCloud Mail on all your devices - Apple Support

If everything appears correct, we recommend contacting Apple Support to look into this issue further with you: Get Support

All the best.

Hey there alpha6019,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We're happy to provide some assistance.

We see that your iCloud Mail is offline. To help resolve this, let's follow the actions in this resource:

If a mailbox is offline in Mail on Mac

"In the Mail app  on your Mac, do one of the following:

    • Take all accounts online: Click the lightning bolt icon or choose Mailbox > Take All Accounts Online.
    • Take a specific account online (if you have more than one account): Click the lightning bolt icon next to the account’s mailbox, or choose Mailbox > Online Status > Take [account] Online.

If you can’t take an account online, make sure you’re connected to the internet. If a warning icon appears next to the account name, click it to open Connection Doctor. Learn more about using Connection Doctor.

Some mailbox names can appear dimmed if you don’t have permission to access them, such as public mailboxes on a Mail server."

Keep us posted.

Have a great day!

Thanks @Rob_H1, but unfortunately that's just what I tried before: taking the account online and then using Connection Doctor. Doing that led me to the log files, which show that Mail seems to be trying to connect to my old mail server imap.mail.yahoo.com (because that was my old Apple ID several months ago). As I mentioned in my original post, I've removed the old yahoo.com account from both 'System Preferences' and 'Mail' - 'Preferences' - 'Accounts'.

See attached image from Connection Doctor. The diagnostics suggest that I'm trying to connect to imap.mail.yahoo.com using my new icloud.com address. Is there anyplace else where the old yahoo.com address might still be lurking? Any additional suggestions appreciated!

Yup, it looks like I have, from the beginning, been following the instructions at Set up iCloud Mail on all your devices - Apple Support. See attached screenshot.

In addition, I've removed any reference to the yahoo.com.au email address everywhere I can think of, even my own contact details, but still no luck .... :-(

There is one thing, however, that I haven't tried yet—signing out from System Preferences -> Apple ID and then signing back in again. Any downside to trying that?

Thanks.
