MacOS UI lagging after upgrading to Ventura

Hi all,

Recently, I've updated my 2021 Macbook Pro M1 16-inch from Monterey 12.6 to Ventura and there's a huge regress in the terms of smoothness of animations, and overall user interface.

I'm a programmer, so I indeed use CPU and RAM a lot, but I did so on Monterey as well and it was great. Right now it really disrupts my everyday work, when I can't even use IntelliJ smoothly.

Did any of you experience the same issue, or is it just me? Do you think there's a way to get back to Monterey without losing the data? Sadly, I haven't made any backups.

Best wishes

Dominik

I would concentrate on resolving your issue as compared to going backwards...

you lose all data without a backup—

If you value your user data

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

More than one device, more than one backup methodology.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

all known to cause issues on the macOS

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

—SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Takes a bit longer to get to the login screen, does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, font cache, etc., third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

a reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

if you are having an issue with third party app—

If in doubt refer to the developers website; Support/Help/FAQ/known issues/compatibility/updates/uninstall:

Contact a third party vendor

Thank you for your answer. You've encouraged me to do some troubleshooting and I've managed to find out that the issue doesn't appear when using a built-in display, but rather on the external display only. So basically I can just move the application window from the external display to the built-in one and the issue disappears, while the external display is still connected. When I move the window back, it starts lagging again.

So I've narrowed down the issue's circumstances, but I still don't know the reason. I haven't changed anything except the OS update - the display is the same, I connect it in the same way, apps I use are the same.

But I can see that others have the same issue - it's been reported to the IntelliJ team: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-4983. Actually the workaround provided there seems to be working for me. Disabling Metal rendering makes the program much smoother.

But I still feel like it's not as smooth as on the built-in display. And I think I've been experiencing the issues not only in IntelliJ, but also in other applications, like Firefox. However I can't reproduce it at the moment, I'll be observing it for now.

Anyway, it's already much better than it was before, so thank you for your help once again.
