I have been using Malwarebytes on my MacBook for several years now to protect against ransomware. I do not use any other anti-virus software. My Malwarebytes subscription is due for renewal in 19 days and I wonder if I really need it. Should I consider one of its alternatives? Or not replace it at all?

You only ever needed MalwareBytes to remove Adware that you installed. However, since they now include an antivirus scanner that installs a system extension, I would never recommend it.
If you get tricked into installing adware, use EtreCheck to remove it instead of MalwareBytes.
I don't know why you'd need to use the paid version. I download the free version if I think it's necessary, run it and delete it.

You can use the free Malwarebytes for manual scans if required. This group has many members who do it this way when malware is suspected. It is safe to use.
Short answer, no, you do not need any anti virus protection on the macOS platform. One of the things Apple does really, really well is lock down their system software. Also avoid any and all types of "cleaners" and anti virus software and you'll be much better off.
