iPad iOS 16 slow

My iPad Air 3 upgraded to iOS 16.1 is running very slow or erratic. Typing is intermittent such as clicking but won’t type. Safari ignores swipes intermittently. Email, photos, all apps seem impacted. I’ve restarted iPad several times and it makes me wish I didn’t upgrade to iOS 16. Is my iPad to old to accept iOS 16 because if that’s true why did Apple allow my Air 3 to accept this downgrade in performance. My wife told me her Air 3 upgraded last night has similar problems. I would have bought the iPad Pro but the pro doesn’t allow me to split the virtual keyboard. But that’s another issue.

After ANY iOS/iPadOS upgrade/update, you should ALWAYS perform a simple hard reset/forced restart of your Apple mobile device.

For iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset/forced restart of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

OR

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5 and 2021 iPad Mini 6 models.

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

Your year and model iPad is plenty powerful enough to run iPadOS 16.

I have an older iPad Pro that is older than your 2019 iPad Air 3.

You may need to do a full backup and restore of that iPad, to either Apple iCloud or by using a Mac or Windows PC.

Tap the link below.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Then you will need to fully erase all contents and settings on this iPad, under the Settings App, under General Settings panel, under the Transfer or Reset iPad panel.

If you have access to a full computer, like a Mac or Windows PC, try either using the Finder on a Mac that has the newest macOS Catalina, or later macOS, installed OR with an older Mac with an older Mac OS, download and install the latest iTunes version ( or latest iTunes for Windows PC ), make sure the Mac or Windows PC is connected to the Internet, connect your iPad by the USB charge cable to the computer and let the iTunes application to do the iPad backup and restore from a Mac or Windows P

Make sure your iPad is, at least, charged to 50% or greater to attempt this.

Make sure your desktop/laptop computer has plenty of internal drive storage space, also.

If NO access to a Mac or Windows computer, you will have to seek help from a good friend or family member, with a full Mac or Windows PC, to help you out

Search online to locate and call contact your nearest, “local” Apple Store location to try/attempt to make an appointment to get your Apple iPad upgraded/updated to its latest iPadOS 15 version.

OR, alternatively, use the “Get Support” link, at the upper right hand corner of every Apple Support Community Webpage to attempt to schedule an appointment with your nearest Apple Store location.

That's still a decent amount of free data storage space left.

Do you have an inordinate amount of still active Website tabs in a Web browser while using the Web browser?

You may need to close down some of those Website tabs.

Do you have a lot of, potentially, background running apps hanging in the iOS/iPadOS app switcher?

Quit apps in the app switcher by putting a finger on a app window and slide the app window upward off the iPad's screen.

You should be able to quit multiple apps, in the app switcher, using multiple fingers on multiple app windows.

See if this helps with iPad performance.

Also, look at my iPad battery and performance optimisation tips.

I have recently updated this tip for use with iPadOS 15 only. Locations of some settings may, or may not, have changed in iPadOS 16.

Good Luck!

Follow all of my previous replies/advice in this thread posting.

Also, What is the rated, internal data storage space/capacity of your iPad model and how much of this free, internal data storage capacity is left inside of your iPad model?

All of that additional info can, also, be found in the Settings app, General settings panel, About.

Your iPad needs sufficient free internal data storage space. At the very least, bewtween 3- 7 GBs or greater internal, free data storage space.

Keep your screen brightness down, but keep it at a comfortable viewing percentage.

Use Dark mode whenever possible to turn off pixels and also save on battery and help improve device performance.

Dark mode can be invoke from the iOS/iPadOS Control Centre, by being on any Home screen and swiping a finger downward from the upper right hand corner od the iPads screen and tapping the icon of a circle that ie filled in half black/half white or can be turned ON/OFF or put on a timer, from the Settings app under Display and Brightness panel, under Options.

Go to the Settings app, under the General Settings Panel and under Background App Refresh, and either toggle this OFF “globally” for the entire iPad

OR

Toggle off Background App Refresh, individually, for any apps that you feel really do not need to have their data always refreshed in the background.

In Settings app, under Notifications, completely toggle off Notifications for any app/s that you feel you do not need notifications for OR modify the methods of notifications to minimise the different Notification delivery method/s.

Also, in Settings app, under Mail, Accounts, Fetch New Mail, modify the frequency at which you autimatically receive new emails.

Make sure the iOS background app switcher does NOT have a “truck full” of apps just hanging out there.

Either dbl-click the Home button or, from the Home screen, slide a finger upward from the bottom edge of the iPad's screen to about 1/3 the way up the screen to invoke the iPadOS background app switcher.

To quit apps, put a finger on a app window and slide the app window, with your finger all the way upward toward the top of the iPad's screen.

You can use multiple fingers to slide up multiple app windows to quit multiple apps.

All of this should help with both overall device performance AND battery life performance.

I've noticed that my iPad Pro Gen 1 is also slower; the time between when I tap the screen and an action completes seems to be slower. I restarted the iPad even though I'm sure it was automatically restarted with the last update, and it made a slight increase in speed. There's definitely a slowness though. I hope any future updates to older devices don't degrade speed.
