APFS User Agent Notification

I am trying to update to Ventura. It downloads, then starts preparing the update.

I then get a notification that says "APFS User Agent Notification"

Shortly after, I get a notice that "The software update failed to prepare. Try again."

Running MacBook Air Retina 2018

1.6 GHz Dual Core Intel Core i5

8 GB RAM 2133 MHZ

I have tried 3 times and the same happened each time.

I tried a Safe Reboot and the same thing happened.

Any help would be appreciated.

What OS is currently installed? I'm trying to determine if you are updating Ventura from 13.0 to 13.0.1 or whether you are running macOS 12.x or earlier and upgrading to Ventura. Updating & upgrading have slightly different meanings here with the former being a minor point release patch, while the later is moving to a new major version of the OS.

What file system is on the SSD?

Use Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container to check the integrity of the file system. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" so that the hidden Container appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll back through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed. If there are any unfixed errors, then run First Aid from Internet Recovery Mode (Command + Option + R), otherwise you will need to erase the whole physical SSD, reinstall the OS, and restore from a backup.

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if you can install the update or upgrade since Safe Mode prevents the automatic launching of third party software during boot & login.

Hey 13Mike31,

Trying to upgrade in safe mode was a great step! In your troubleshooting, did you also repair your hard drive using Disk Utility? If not, do that now as it can help when having an issue with updating. Here's a guide to show you how, just in case: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility - Apple Support

If the behavior continues, there are additional steps to take here: If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS - Apple Support

Let us know how it goes.

Take care!
