2022 Apple TV not updating Apple ID settings.

The new 2022 Apple TV (with Ethernet) has a persistent error for me for updating Apple ID settings.

I have tried multiple Apple ID’s, logged out and back in with the ID’s and reset the Apple TV but every single time there is a red #1 at the “users & accounts” and it is always to “update Apple ID settings”

Every time I choose to update Apple ID settings, I need to initiate from my iPhone and after a few minutes it will error out and pop up on the iPhone telling me to wait a moment and try again.

This makes no sense to me because my Apple ID is correct and all my apps and HomeKit work fine.

Downloading new apps and purchasing items using my Apple ID also works fine.

The only issue I have come across is that the Apple TV no longer recognizes my AirPods when nearby meaning there is no seamless transfer from iPhone to Apple TV.

The AirPods also were not in my Bluetooth settings on the TV when I set the Apple TV, I needed to add them manually to the Apple TV and that doesn’t recognize the AirPods when nearby automatically like with the previous 4K Apple TV.

I had this same problem and was able to solve it by doing this:

  • updated my phone to iOS 16
  • from Settings on Apple TV, selected Reset, then Update and Reset (I got a warning that I'd have to re-install all my apps, but at this point I just needed to fix and as was ok with reinstalling everything. Despite the warning, all my apps were still installed and working fine at the end of this).
  • Updated Apple ID settings, connected to my phone, signed in with my Apple ID (I have 2FA enabled, and did not get a code, or a prompt for one, and did not need to append a code to the end of my password). I ended up with a message saying everything was updated, and now everything works again. This last part of the process took a few minutes.
  • One other thing I'll mention, but probably doesn't have any bearing, after the Apple TV started back up, it complained that there wasn't an active wifi connection. I hadn't seen that message before, and have an ethernet cable plugged in and I wasn't using wifi, so the message wasn't wrong, but maybe there was something about my network that was causing an issue? I unplugged the ethernet cable and connected to my wifi network for this process.

Hope this helps!

I eventually discovered that I was not fully logged in to Apple on my iPhone. Somehow I was logged in to some Apple services but not everything. Once I fully logged in to Apple on my iPhone, then I was able to receive the two-factor notification on my Phone.

Seems to me that Apple could improve this by

  1. providing clear error messages, and/or
  2. providing a "manual" login process on the Apple TV

Thank you for those details, MNC3rd!

Do you happen to use two-factor authentication? If so, is a code being sent to your device? We ask because if you're Apple ID is used on a previous generation of Apple TV, it may be required that you add the six-digit code to the end of your password to sign in. Please visit the below link for additional details.

It is because your Apple TV requires you to have ios16 on your device, else it won’t update. (Read the small print on the photo). If your device is old, like my old iPhone, the max is ios15. So basically apple wants you to get a new device that can download the latest available iOS software update. There is no work around, I’ve tried. Good luck, happy shopping.

Hi,

The status for my account is still pending.

I have spoken with Care support doing a multitude of troubleshooting steps including restarting, restoring, changing ID password, using a completely new and different ID among other steps.

All has been for naught so far but I have submitted diagnostic reports from the TV to Apple support and when I last spoke with them, I was told the problem and diagnostic reports were being elevated to the Apple TV engineering department for help because Care support said they have exhausted all their resources without being able to solve the issue.

I’m a hoping to hear back with a resolution soon and will post back when/if I do.

I’m having the same issue as well, following a change of password for my Apple ID.

I recently changed my Apple ID password after receiving a notification for two-factor authentication telling me that a login request was coming from a location far away from mine (I subsequently learned that Apple uses IP location for these requests, not GPS, so my fears were unfounded. That’s a side issue).

Anyway, now I am having the same problem as the others here: a notification that I need to update my Apple ID settings on my Apple TV (options to use my phone + Bluetooth/Wi-Fi) and then a persistent error when I try.

Thank you very much for responding.

To answer your question, yes, I have restarted the Apple TV multiple times and I even reset the Apple TV.

I attached pictures to show exactly what I’m seeing.

The iPhone screenshots show what happens when I select “Update Apple ID Settings”

1st “Updating Settings”

2nd After a minute or two, the iPhone pop up next to the Apple TV, just changes to red and says “Please try again” and the Apple TV just stays on the settings screen with nothing accomplished.

Thank you very much for replying.

To answer your question I do have two factor authentication set up for my Apple ID, but I am not receiving a two factor authentication code, when trying to update the Apple ID settings on this Apple TV, but it certainly is possible that my Apple ID was associated with the previous Apple TV.

I suppose it is best that I reach out to Apple support because I certainly have no idea what else I can do

thank you again

Its been quite a while at this point and I am still having this issue, I even went as far as buying another brand new Apple TV 4K and logged in using my Apple ID and a brand new unused Apple ID but I keep getting the same exact issue.

i’m thinking I may buy an old Apple TV to log in with my Apple ID and see if I have the same issue but at this point I’ve kind of just given up because Apple support has not been able to come up with a solution still so I’m kind of just hoping that an update will fix it soon or it is what it is.

The only things that I’m missing because of this problem is that my AirPods no longer switch automatically between my iPhone and the Apple TV like they used to but other than that I’m still able to make purchases and download with my Apple ID so it’s not a very big deal, but is an issue because I do use my AirPods when watching the TV sometimes to not disturb my wife.
