Live pictures are only live when in a Photos library. When exported as original photos out the the library there will be two files with the same file name but different extensions: XXX.jpg and XXX.mov. When imported together into a Photos library it will become a live photo again.

You you can export the files to a folder on the EHD as original files. Make sure the EHD is formatted APFS if an SSD or Mac OS Extended (journaled) if a rotational drive.

There are other professional DAM (digital asset management) apps out there that you can use along with the iPhone. They are just not as integrated into the system as Photos is. One I used to use was called Media Pro. I thought it was better than iPhoto or even Photos is now. It could create virtual albums like Photos, add keywords and other metadata and even do versions editing. Unfortunately the developers dropped it and when Mac systems went 64 bit it was history for Media Pro.

I may be preaching to the choir here but there's a book and site, The DAM Book: Homehttps://thedambook.com, that described and evaluated all off the DAM apps. Their website was a user to user site on solving problems with the various apps like the ASC is.

Thank you for your clear and quick reply.

It sounds like there is no way around squeezing Apple's "Photos" library into the workflow.

(It's ironic and frustrating that the cameras on the iPhone continues to improve to the point that I'm using it commercially, yet the Apple software and hardware meant to support those images seem utterly disconnected from the actual user. Every time I call professional svs. with basic userability queries they are like "great question, we hadn't heard that before and don't have a good answer at this time.")
