Apple allows purchase of a domain name through a third party company. Does this include registration and hosting? My current provider registers and hosts my domain name and then charges extra for a email service. I am attempting to figure out if iCloud plus will replace the current email service and the $150 a year fee. The domain name hosting company would have to allow modification of its servers for this to happen. Just curious, has anyone tried this?

No. Apple will not register or host you domain. It merely lets you redirect your domain email to iCloud.

Wether your registrar then stops charging you for the email hosting, is entirely up to them.

I would assume the $150 year fee will continue for as longs you want to keep that domain.
