What's this orange container thing? Unable to rearrange individual pages.

I have a document that I am working on and the thumbnails on the left hand side has this new orange container. I can't move, copy, or delete a single page that's in the orange container without duplicating or deleting the entire orange container. What happened?

How do I get rid if this orange outline container thing?

Very frustrating to not be able to move or delete a single page.

Thanks

You have a word processing format document. What you get by default. The only way to get page 4 content before page 2 would be to take these following steps:

  1. Place your insertion point in front of the first character on page 2, and from the Insert menu > Page break. Now you have a blank page preceding what was page 2.
  2. Select all of the content on the former page 4 and cut it to the clipboard. Click on that blank page 2, and then paste into it. Your original page 4 is now blank.
  3. Click in the first text position of your now empty page 4, and press backspace to remove that page entirely.

You need to understand that you are using the word processing format of Pages and nothing has changed with regard to limitations with section/page thumbnails. You can only rearrange sections and their accompanying pages, and there is no deletion of a page by attempting to delete a thumbnail. You would need to select the entire contents of a page and backspace twice to remove it and its preceding page break.

A Pages Layout document type is where every thumbnail is both a section and a page, and these can be arbitrarily rearranged, or specifically removed.

See Pages User Guide for Mac - Apple Support

And if you a tired of that orange treatment in Pages, then visit System Preferences > General > Accent color on Monterey or earlier, or Settings > Appearance > Accent color on Ventura.

"The only thing that changed is the type of document you were using last month."

Im not quite sure by what you mean by changing document types, I just open Pages and go, but fair enough.

So, in that case, hit me with your level 10 Viking Wizardry!!!!

How can I reorder page 4 and have it insert before page 2 since I've done something bad to the file.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply, however:

"nothing has changed"

Something has changed.

Last month I was able to move individual pages around by click and drag to a new position, or when I needed to duplicate page 3, I would right click on the left thumbnail and select duplicate.

Now when I right click on page 3 and select "duplicate" so I can have a duplicate of page 3, ALL 5 pages duplicate and I now have 2 sets of the 5 page document each in its own container. How do I get rid of this "container"

My workflow habits haven't changed, Im a fairly simple operator. I don't even use "preferences" I just work stock. (I don't even change my wallpaper :)

Pages version 12.2 (7035.0.159)

Mac OS 12.6.1

Thanks again
