where did the music I purchased go when I cancelled my subscription

I had Apple Music subscription and purchased/downloaded a number of songs to my iphone. I eventually cancelled the Apple music subscription since I wasn't using it/downloading tunes. When I cancelled, I lost all the songs I paid for and downloaded. What's that about???
