What year model is that iMac?

Do you have the stock drive and was it working when you swapped drives?

Did you reformat the SSD and then install macOS or clone the old drive to it externally before installing it in the iMac?

If the old drive was working, put it into a USB enclosure or on a USB to SATA adapter and plug that into the iMac. Then startup from the recovery partition on the old drive, so that you can format the SSD. Then install macOS or optionally clone the old drive to the SSD using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper.
