AIRTAG - how do changing phone # tied to airtag?

how do you change the phone # on the airtag? on setup it defaults to the 2nd phone (with no option to change it) i have associated to my apple account and i want to assign it to the primary phone #.

NOTE - THIS IS NOT ABOUT A PHONE, IT IS ABOUT AN AIRTAG....SELECTING AIRTAG AS A TOPIC WAS NOT AN OPTION.

I see where i can change the device name and address so i can change those, but not the phone number....for that matter, why is a phone # association needed? will find my only work from the phone associated to the airtag?

Prior questions i found on this topic seemed to provide incorrect instructions.

Thanks!

Hello ScottGjerdingen,

That's a fantastic question! The AirTag will associated to your Apple ID username and the phone number associated to your Apple ID. If you're using Dual SIM on your iPhone and the second number was the number in use at the time yo used up the AirTag, this may be why it associated to that number. Removing the AirTag from Find My, switching to your preferred phone number on the iPhone, then setting up the AirTag again may help with resolving this issue. You can find the steps for switching between your phone numbers listed below and in the following article.

Switch phone numbers for a call
  1. "Tap the Info button .
  2. Tap the current phone number.
  3. Tap your other number."

"If you're using the keypad, follow these steps:

  1. Enter the phone number.
  2. Tap the phone number, near the top of the screen.
  3. Tap the number that you want to use."

Using Dual SIM with an eSIM

You can find the steps for removing an AirTag from Find My on iPhone, and setting up your AirTag again via the links below. These steps should help with updating the contact information.

ScottGjerdingen,

Thank you for that clarification. It could be that the number the AirTag is associating with is listed on your Apple ID as the trusted phone number for your Apple ID under two-factor authentication. You can take a look at this article to check your trusted phone numbers and add additional numbers to your Apple ID.

Thank-you but my scenario I think is slightly different.

i have 2 different phones tied to the same Apple ID. I activated the air tag from my primary phone but when it showed me the phone number it was associating with the air tag, it showed the other phone, not the one I was activating it from. It also gave me no option to change this… hence my question.

So, unless I’m not understanding, I did what you are suggesting but didn’t behave as you suggested.

thanks

scott
