Mac Password / Reset Encrypted Data

My wife is having the same issue as the below link. Her iPhone is asking for the macbook password and then says it was entered incorrectly too many times and she has to "Reset Encrypted Data". When we click continue to Reset Encrypted Data, a warning appears that says she could lose critical data from iMessage and iCloud. I would like to follow the steps, but how do i know this issue with losing data will not occur? She would be devastated to lose old iMessage and iCloud data.

Thank you,

Rob
