Drag and Drop files and documents to new Mac

Hi All,

I've just bought a new MBP and want to move files and documents from my old Mac to the new one.

I know I can use Migration Assistant, but I don't want everything coming across.from my old Mac.

I have a backup of my iTunes and Photos files, which I'm planning on dragging and dropping into the Music and Photos folders on my new Mac. Then will drop a few word and excel docs into the documents folder on Finder. Is this OK to do?

Applications I'll reinstall from.scratch. I'm hoping Final Cut Studio from 2010 will work on the new mac.

Hello A1ps,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you need help with migrating data. We completely understand why you'd reach out, and are happy to help.

Dragging and dropping your files will work with getting files over, however you may want to use iTunes Sync library for your music, as iCloud Photos as well.

This will ensure that your music and Photo Library is the same across all devices:

Use Sync Library to access your music library across your devices - Apple Support

Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

Please have a look and let us know if this helps!

Cheers!

Just as long as you place these in exact the same place, it will probably work.

But I'd really use Migration Assistant, taking care to chose ONLY the user accounts.

It ensures that not just the photos and music are transferred correctly, but your preferences too.

And you can easily delete other documents if you don't want them.

NOTE: I certainly do NOT recommend that you migrate applications, or settings.

Guys, thank you for all your help on this.

I just tried a little something by dragging and dropping the photos file from my old Mac to my new one. And after about 3 hours it's all done and it looks as though it's worked, All my photos and albums seem to be there. The location details seem to be there. All I need to do now is cross check it against the photos on my old Mac to make sure all is as it should be.

Have to admit though, if it has worked properly and all my photos are there, I'm quite shocked this method has worked!

Thanks Luis.

on my old Mac, the photos file was in the Pictures folder, so can that simply go in the Pictures folder on the new Mac?

The iTunes file was on a second internal hard drive on my old Mac, so I’m assuming this file can’t go into the Music folder on my new Mac. If not, what do I need to do to place this file into the music folder on the new Mac?

There are alternatives, you know...

Premiere? Final Cut Pro is a one time paid application; DaVinci Resolve free version is probably just as powerful, if not more.

Photoshop? There's Affinity Photo, and Pixelmator Pro - both one time purchases, very much built for the mac, and support import and export in Photoshop format

Illustrator? Affinity Designer

and more

There are also alternatives for Microsoft Applications, and free too... Pages, Keynote, Numbers are all free as is the LibreOffice suite.

I have been using Final Cut Pro since 2011 and never had to pay an extra cent since then. If had gone with Premiere, it would have cost me dearly.
