Editing a relationship to a contact

When in contacts I go to add a related name, such as son, mother, daughter, other, etc. there doesn’t seem to be a way to personalize this anymore. Am I missing something? I have a contact labeled “son-in-law” set as an emergency contact so I know I used to be able to do this. I am trying to add my daughter-in-law as an emergency contact and I can either choose daughter or other. Daughter isn’t accurate and might seem odd in an emergency, while other might make her feel slighted if she were to see how she’s entered in my phone! How do I enter the personalized relationships, help?!

Hello Chaoscrdntr13,

That is correct. In the Contacts app, you can access the full relationship name list or create a custom one. When you're adding an emergency contact in the Health app, it only gives a limited amount of options for the Relationship category. If none of the options apply or you don't want to set up a relationship, just select Other on that page to finish adding the emergency contact. The relationship set to a contact will make no difference in how the emergency contact function performs in an emergency.

If you'd like to see Apple add the full relationship list or the option to create a custom one in the emergency contacts menu, you can submit that suggestion to them through their feedback site: Product Feedback

Cheers!

This works to change the contact in your phone contacts, but when you’re setting up an emergency contact, the phone makes you choose a relationship again. It won’t use the existing relationship for some reason, and there is not a way I have found to choose a personalized relationship anymore, there must have been in the past because as I said, my son-in-law is listed as son-in-law. But now they are stock choices. Is there any way to personalize a relationship in this area?

This is a frustrating change. As someone who works in the medical field I believe it DOES function differently in an emergency with this change. And since it still functions the same in the contacts area it seems to be an arbitrary change. In the past it let me designate a personal relationship that would specify one of my contacts was my “power-of-attorney“. In a medical emergency that could be extremely important information. Now I’m supposed to simply state other? That does not give a medical person the information that could be vital in an emergency. This is very disappointing. I hope Apple considers returning to the previous option.
