No sound for video after uploading to shared folder

This started happening a few weeks ago, but today's iOS update v16.1.1 or the current Ventura v13.0 have not addressed this major issue.

Uploading a video from Photos into any Shared Folder strips the sound from my videos. I have tried all of the various options when uploading, but there is no secret door.

Older videos already in Shared Folders are not affected (thankfully!), it's just the new ones attempting to be placed there.

This is a major fault by Apple, and I have left several messages on Twitter for @AppleSupport, but they haven't acknowledge me. They usually do because I feed them a lot of good information.

Does anyone know why it's happening because I need to get my videos up into my Shared Folders, but it's been an ongoing issue for quite some time?

Thanks : )

PS - I have selected MacBook Air, but this is across the board in iOS, too

This was very unhelpful, and proves that you didn’t read everything. I am a Mac user of 30 years - did you seriously think I would overlook all updates? And anyway, what about iOS? Either way, both OSX and iOS had already been updated (always on the release date!) on all devices and yet the issue persists.

Once again, and a previously mentioned, it is an Apple issue not a user issue : )

Haha, thanks for telling me how to suck eggs. I've been using Macs for 30 years :)

No, this is what's happening on my MacBook Air M1 & iPad Pro - I drag and drop a video into a Shared Folder in Photos, but the sound is completely stripped after upload.

Here is what also happens when using my iPhone - the sound of the video is initially audible after placing a video into a Shared Folder, but no sound is available on the other two devices... and when I return to the iPhone, the sound has disappeared.

These are:

  1. Self-made videos created/exported in FCP and DaVinci Resolve - in Quicktime format
  2. Screenshot videos from MacBook Air, iPad Pro and iPhone
  3. Saved from internet videos in various formats
  4. Email-received videos

...All of which I have been creating and using for many years, but it's only now this issue arises.

It's not a user issue, it is an Apple Ventura issue.

Hey inknpaper,

We'd recommend reviewing the information in this article as it provides the steps for exporting videos which may help: Export photos, videos, slideshows, and memories in Photos

"Export videos

You can export videos so that you can share them or work with them in other apps. When you export a video, you can choose the movie quality and whether metadata such as a title or caption is included with the exported file.

  1. In the Photos app  on your Mac, select videos you want to export.
  2. Choose File > Export > Export [number] Videos.
  3. Click the Movie Quality pop-up menu and choose the video format for the exported video.
  4. A dialog showing options for exporting videos.
  5. Standard definition (480p) is good for standard-definition TV. If the video will play on a high-definition TV or display, choose one of the high-definition formats: 720p or 1080p. 4K is used for ultra-high-definition TVs and displays.
  6. Click the File Name pop-up menu and choose how to name the exported files (this step is optional).
  7. You can name your exported files using the titles you’ve given them in Photos, their filenames, or a filename numbered sequentially. If you choose Sequential, you can specify text to appear before each number (for example, Birthday - 1, Birthday - 2, and so on).
  8. Click the Subfolder Format pop-up menu and choose how to divide the exported files into folders.
  9. For example, if you export videos from several different days, you can have Photos export each day as a subfolder named after the day. Choose None to export the videos as individual files without subfolders.
  10. Click Export.
  11. Choose where to save the exported video files, then click Export.

Tip: If you’re signed in with your Apple ID and have iCloud Drive turned on, you can export video files to iCloud Drive, then access them from any Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Windows PC set up to use iCloud Drive. See Use iCloud Drive to store documents."

If that doesn't help, we'd recommend contacting Apple Support for further assistance here: Get Support

Thanks!

Hello inknpaper,

According to the following: What's new in the updates for macOS Ventura - Apple Support macOS Ventura 13.0.1 is the most current macOS Ventura update available. We'd recommend updating your Mac to the latest Venture version and then test if this issue persists: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

If it continues to occur, then it would be best to contact Apple Support

They'll need to take it from here.

Wishing you well, take care.
