No audio when dropping compound clip into new project

Hello,

This question was originally asked here but I don't think I understand the proposed solution: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251749156?answerId=253356830022#253356830022

When I drop compound clips into projects (even the same project it came from), the sound doesn't transfer. The instance that was created when I first made the compound clip does have sound. Here's a screenshot below with two instances of the same compound clip. The one on the left is the original instance created by the program and the second one on the right is an instance I dragged in as a test. You can see sound on the left but not for the instance on the right.

This doesn't make any sense to me. Surely there's a way to make the compound clips carry over the audio as well as the video without copying and pasting it?

I have 15 different 4 hour long media files (from VHS tapes). All of the media is already cut into different projects, so unfortunately compound clips are the only way for me to organise the groups of shots cut out of the tapes.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You can use a compound clip multiple times, but it's always the same compound clip, make a change. all instances change. You can make a new parent compound clip, which creates a second, separate compound in the browser.

This is why the second compound has no audio

This is set to edit video only

Change the popup on the right so it's like this

That's video and audio.

Oh so the compound clips can't be used as instances then? Perhaps that is my miscomprehension. I'm new to FCP and this is my first project using it. Basically I'm trying to figure out a way of taking sequences of shots from the VHS tapes and then organising them into several different compilations. That's why I was attempting to use compound shots as instances. Are you saying that compound shots are usually only used in one instance (the instance that appears in the original clip's place)?

Is there a better way for me to group cuts of the same clip into instances? I'd like to avoid exporting the sequences out if possible because I need to keep all the cuts.

Here are the screenshots you requested. I'm using Mac OS Big Sur 11.2.3 and FCP Trial 10.5.2.

Inside the compound clip (the audio waveforms are showing):

Here are screenshots of the project:

The good instance (the one automatically created on creation of the compound clip)-

The bad instance (here I can see the audio is indeed not showing in the info pane):

I'm not sure why the audio is showing inside the compound clip but then not when I drag it into the timeline though? Here are two more screenshots of the compound clip's settings and info pane:

"second one on the right is an instance I dragged in as a test"

Dragged in where from where? Putting a compound clip in a project doesn't create a new instance of the compound.

Open the compound with the audio and post a screenshot. Look in the audio configurations of the compound clip itself and see what's happening.

What are the project properties? Post a screenshot of the timeline with the compound in the project. With the compound selected cheek the audio configurations for it.

What OS and FCP versions are you using?
