Can't change permissions on external drive, Ventura

In trying to change the folder icons on an external drive I've run into another problem: permissions. While I am able to make changes to permissions on the internal drive I cannot on two external drives. The permissions section of the Get Info states: "You have custom access".

How do I go about changing this? I cannot find any info on this phrase anywhere on Apple's site.

It means there is an Access Control List attached to the top level folder of the drive.

What is on the external drive?

The only reason I could imagine an external drive would have an ACL is if you shared it in Sharing System Preferences.

You can view the ACL in Terminal. Copy/paste in this command, hit return.

ls -le /Volumes

Look for the line with the name of your external drive.

Below that line you should see 0: followed by a string of text.

Copy/paste that into a reply, here.
