Possible bug in macOS 13.0.1 Calendar: not updating meetings from Exchange ICS files

Hi everyone,

I have someone who sends me meetings from an Exchange server and they appear as .ics attachments. For a new meeting this works fine - I click on the .ics file in the meeting invite email and the meeting is added to Calendar, along with all the details.

When they reschedule a meeting that is in the past, I also get an email with an .ics file that has the update meeting day and time. But when I open that .ics file, Calendar highlights the existing past meeting and does not give me any indication that there is a new day/time for the meeting.

I checked the .ics file and it does have the new day and time, so it looks like Calendar does not use the updated information in the .ics file for some reason, for past meetings. If I delete the past meeting and then open the .ics file, Calendar does create a new meeting with the correct day and time.

The desired behaviour for Calendar is to update an existing meeting, even when in the past, using the information in the new .ics file. A dialog box could prompt the user to either update the existing meeting and delete the old meeting, or create a new meeting as well as leaving the old meeting in place (could also be a default behaviour setting in Calendar settings).

Does anyone else see this behaviour in macOS Calendar?

All the best

Mark

About using Exchange calendars on Mac

If your calendars are administered through Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 with Service Pack 1 or later (for example, through your workplace), you have a main Exchange calendar named Calendar in the Calendar app  on your Mac.

You can add calendars to your Exchange calendar account, but you won’t be able to see updated invitations or attendee responses for events in those calendars. Also, events in the additional calendars won’t be visible to delegates (people who share your calendar account) and won’t appear when users check your availability. Full calendar features are available only in your main Exchange calendar.

If this was working properly prior to the update, then we recommend contacting Apple Support for further assistance. Contact Apple Support

Take care.

Hi Jeff,

Perhaps I should not have mentioned Exchange, it isn't really relevant to the problem except that the meeting invites sent by Exchange have an .ics attachment and it is these attachments that I open in macOS Calendar. I suspect that the same bug would occur for any meeting invites sent using an .ics file.

I am not using Exchange, I use iCloud for meetings and I use an email server with my own DNS domain for email. I used macOS Mail for email and this is where I open the meeting invites (where I find the .ics attachments) so I am within the Apple ecosystem.

I am not sure if this was working correctly before the update or not, but in any case it is a good idea to contact Apple Support.
