Locked Files - Ventura

Hi - since updating to OS Ventura, I can no longer delete any locked files from my Nikon Z50 when copied across, so I'm stuck with them on the hard drive. They are greyed out when checking 'Get Info' and unable to untick 'Locked' - never had this until upgrading, anyone else had this ? Thanks

Hi there backspin71,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you have some files you aren't able to delete or change permissions on transferred from your Nikon camera. The first thing we'd recommend is making sure you are currently logged in to your MacBook Pro to a user profile with admin privileges: If you need permission to open an item on Mac - Apple Support

If you don’t have permission to open a file or folder, you may be able to change the permissions settings.

1. On your Mac, select the item, then choose File > Get Info, or press Command-I.
2. Click the arrow  next to Sharing & Permissions to expand the section.
3. Click the pop-up menu next to your user name to see the permissions settings.
If you’re not logged in as an administrator, you may need to click the lock  to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password (or use Touch ID or your Apple Watch).

4. Change the permissions to either Read & Write or “Read only.”

If you can’t change the permissions, contact an administrator of your Mac or the owner of the file or folder.

If you are, and the issue still remains, we'd next recommend checking your Nikon camera settings. There may be something to lock files taken on your camera or if you use a memory card. Here's a link to their general support website: Nikon Worldwide Support Network

All the best.

I am having the same issue. There is no reason that it is a Nikon issue. My D850, a different camera to the OP, has always locked certain files which could be unlocked with the get info tool in mac OS. The camera has not had a firmware update and I am using a memory card that was new-formatted since the upgrade to Ventura

The file is read only and permissions cannot be changed. I am the owner and creator of the file and I am the administrator of the mac.

This is an issue that has only appeared since yesterday's upgrade (yes I was a bit late).

It seems that the SD card has custom permissions. I cannot delete (move to trash) the file. However I can overwrite the file - copied to desktop, unlocked and copied back to the SD card.

This has allowed me to continue without going to the camera to unlock the file. However changing permissions would be a much better way to go. The card's permissions are not changeable, I don't know why. They are set to custom. Possibly because it was Nikon formatted?

Maybe the extra info will point someone in the direction of an answer.

I am also having the same issue. I have many different files that I can never delete on different hard drives, both new and old. I own everything. I have created everything. I have unlocked and given permission to everything, and things are still locked. I even tried some terminal commands that I found online...still no luck.

One of the most interesting things that I can't delete is an FCPX Project that I created, that I tried to copy to a hard drive. I regretted the copy half way so I "stopped" it. Now there is this transparent/resume file there, that I tried to delete and again it won't let me ... "files are locked"... blah blah I have gone in to the folder structure and manually unlocked every "get info" lock for every single individual file and folder. Still no luck.

The result I have a never ending build up of files and folders in my bin, that never go away, and in some cases take up phantom hard drive GB...

Im really frustrated with this...

I am also going through this with Softorino and have four locked files in "/private/var/db/oah/ and even when trying to access them and they are hidden from view through the permission window at the bottom on the Get Info it won't let a person do even though I am the Admin. It is these files over a period of time clog a Mac's space up. Apple has to find a way for the enduser to get ride of them.

I have emailed Softorino and their suggestion was to use AppCleaner but it won't have the permissions in it to delete them and the only way I can see them doing is to write an uninstall app (routine) that has the necessary permissions in it to unlock the files and delete them, unless someone else has a work around for situations such as these.
