connect appletv with imac as a screen

I like to connect my appletv to my iMac (27 inch 2013) and like to use the iMac as a screen for my apple tv. I've bought an thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and thought I could use the target display mode (cmd - F2) to display my appletv on my iMac. But this doesn't work. Any other suggestions? Thank you very much!

Unfortunately for you, that is not supported.

There is no HDMI-in for iMac. iMac can not be used as a screen for HDMI devices. The iMac screen is controlled by the iMac computer instead.

Also, adapters are directional (Thunderbolt to HDMI, but not HDMI to Thunderbolt).

You are going to need a TV (or other stand-alone display) with HDMI-in.
