iPhone 13 cannot print on Epson

The context:

Home network from BOUYGUES Telecom (a French operator) consisting of a modem/router "Bbox", a 4k TV set top box and a repeater (all from Bouygues).

They connect to 2 MacBook Pros (16 and 14"), 2 iPhones (a 13 Pro Max and a 6s), 1 Samsung Galaxy S20, a LG TV, an Epson XP-800 printer/scanner and eventually other family or visitor devices.

Please note that the network from the box and the one relayed by the extender both have the same SSID. This is a feature from Bouygues that cannot be changed. It forced me in the past to power down the extender before power up the printer, and the I could start the extender again. Since quite some time (months) the printer would connect properly without this procedure. I did not identify any change that could have caused this. Of course I re-applied my previous procedure without any success.

Printer diagnostics show no failure

The problem:

I cannot print from either phone to my printer. Both Macs work fine. The phones "cannot find a printer". I reinstalled the printer driver, tried various settings, no help.

It may be a hint: the printer is in the list of my WiFi network as discovered by

Technical info:

iPhone 13 Pro Max under iOS 15.7.1 (same for 6s)

MacBook Pro 16" end 2019 under MacOS 12.6.1 Monterey (same for 14" M1)

if it can help Bouygues info is:

Bbox model Fast5330b-r1, software 22.3.12

Epson printer (+ scanner & Fax) XP-800 model EPSON2FC960, software 49.MB06J2

A few network scans:

From iPhone and below From MBPro connected to Ethernet

iPhone 13 Pro Max, iOS 15

Hi,

An Epson XP-800 is not specifically listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support (other XP-8xx models are). However, the brochure https://files.support.epson.com/pdf/xp800_/xp800_spec.pdf indicates AirPrint support (perhaps an early version).

You said that "I reinstalled the printer driver". Are you using "plain" AirPrint (without an additional app) for the iPhones, or possibly an iOS app from Epson? What about the Macs (without or with drivers)?

An AirPrint-enabled printer model is compatible with macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, and can be used without the need for additional drivers/software, provided that the printer and a Mac computer, and an iPhone/iPad, are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router). AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections.

The XP-800 can use both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, so you could choose to connect the printer by Ethernet to one of the LAN ports of the router instead of using Wi-Fi. An Ethernet printer connection may be more stable.

If there is a device discovery problem, you could try the following full procedure (in this order, with these waiting times):

Power off the Wi-Fi router, the Wi-Fi extender, the printer, the Macs, the iPhones, and all other connected devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait a minute or two. Power on the extender. Wait a minute or two. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the Macs. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.

Thanks to all of you. I solved the problem mostly by applying Jan's suggestions mixed with verification of parameters and configurations as all of you guys proposed.

I restored the configuration (except for personal parameters, when it was possible) for the router, the printer. I shut down and restarted the Macs and the iPhone. I tested printing without the extender then with the extender on. Everything work OK now.

I assume that the problem came from the WiFi settings on the printer.

The printer drivers I use are epson637208eu.dmg and epson645146eu.dmg can't remember which is which but the one proposed when adding the printer works good. I added an USB and a WiFi "printer" (both OK); I'll check the Ethernet connection later.

So thanks again to all of you and to the Community for helping me resolve the case.

Cheers!

Hello maxou_42,

If iOS devices are unable to find an AirPrint printer, you'll want to make sure you've set up the printer for wireless printing through AirPrint. Here's the recommended steps from that printers user guide:

Using AirPrint

AirPrint allows you to wirelessly print to AirPrint-enabled EPSON products directly from iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running the latest version of iOS.

  1. Set up your EPSON product for wireless printing as described on the Start Here sheet.
  2. Connect your Apple device to the same wireless network that your product is using.
  3. Print from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to your EPSON product.

XP-800 User's Guide

Here's some additional support articles from EPSON on the AirPrint functionality in their printers: Apple AirPrint Support

If iOS devices still aren't able to see that printer, then you'll want to contact EPSON for assistance with it.

Cheers!
