iTunes Automatically Moving Files to "Compilations" Folder

I am going to outline a very specific issue. I am uploading from CD to iTunes the 2021 West Side Story Soundtrack. iTunes automatically filed it as "Music:Compilations:West Side Story:Track #."

I do not want it as a subfolder of "Compilations." I Moved to be "Music:West Side Story:Track #." When I return to iTunes to have it locate the song, it moves it back to "Compilations." I even deleted "Compilations" and iTunes creates the folder again.

I never want any uploaded CD to go into the "Compilation" folder. How do I stop this?

Windows, Windows 10

Hi,

Once you've added content to iTunes for Windows you shouldn't move it by hand as the app won't know where to find the relocated file. If you don't like the way iTunes organizes content then go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced and turn off the option to Keep iTunes Media folder organized. Then in future organize files where you want them before adding to the library.

You can fix the broken links you've made by moving files back where they came from, or use a script I've written called FindTracks to repair them. For the future you might like to use another script called CustomRenamer to set things out in your preferred layout. Note that although I too am very particular about where everything ends up I generally recommend you leave iTunes to it. Most people can simply enjoy their music in iTunes without worrying about where it is stored.

With Keep & Copy disabled new rips, downloads, or conversions would still go to the default layout. Which build of iTunes do you have installed? Perhaps it isn’t respecting the options.

These are user to user support forums, while a community specialist might point you towards some support articles they are not usually able to get deeply involved. If it is a reproducible issue with the build you have I can supply links to recent versions.

It is now even worse... All of my Soundtracks and Greatest Hits albums are no longer linked. iTunes wants me to one by one for 4,000+ songs to link each (the link others option does not work). When I link the song, it is automatically moved to "Compilations."

I have a backup copy of my iTune Library that I can install, but that means all the work I did today may be lost. Also, I want to know how to turn off this "Feature" before I continue.

Thanks

Thank you for your response.

Let me clarify my problem and provide an update...

I have gone to Preferences and unchecked both "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library." This does not stop iTunes from wanting to load the West Side Story soundtrack in the "Compilations" folder.

As for manually moving folders, I have been doing it since 2010. I own over 1,800 CDs, but have not used iTunes to manage my collection since 2017. (There was an iTunes update that removed all my song information from the playlist. It wasn't until recently that I learned that I can simply pull an .itl file from "Previous iTunes Libraries" to restore my settings.) Prior to me being frustrated in 2017, after I would manually move songs I would simply use the "Locate" function to link the new location to the library. I use a dedicated Surface Pro as a music server and like how I can uses iTunes to push songs to different amps/Apple TV devices. That said, I need to keep the songs properly organized in folders for the times when I use another device to access my music. The way I now have my music organized works for all devices.

So to recap:

1) Unchecking the "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" boxes did not stop iTunes from loading a soundtrack to the "Compilations" folder.

2) Trying to manually override the file location results in iTunes wanting to automatically move all my soundtracks and greatest hits albums to the "Compilations" folder.

I am hoping another audiofile (or an Apple employees monitoring these discussions) who had this issue know the trick to stop this.

Cheers!
