iPad Pro freezing after going to sleep from lock screen

I have a brand new M2 iPad Pro 12.9 running IOS 16.1.1 and I tapped the screen to wake it up but I didn't go to the Home Screen but let it stay on the Lock Screen and let it go back to sleep. Trouble is it went into a deep sleep and would not wake up. It took several attempts tapping the up volume, then the down volume then holding the on/off button before it started again. I was worried that it would not start at all.

Is this a software issue or hardware? I have had this happen once or twice before on other models so I reckon it could be a software issue.

The iPad is working fine again now but I am hesitant ever to let it go to sleep from the Lock Screen again. Anyone else have this issue?

I found this webpage reporting our issue on iPhones using v16.1.1

they claim the issue has to do with old photos used as Wallpaper.

read about it, link below…I hope it works.

note, iphone has a new update to 16.1.2 on 30Nov2022, I am not going to update my iphone for a few weeks.

I hope 16.1.2 is released for iPad soon with this “black screen” issue.

Hello Odanster,

While it's difficult to speculate on what may have caused this behavior on your iPad Pro, it's most likely software-related. We'd like to learn more to see how we can help. Was the battery fully charged when this happened? Were you using a specific app on your iPad before it went to sleep?

Hello Odanster,

Thanks for those details.

It sounds like the steps in the article helped. If your iPad won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support

That's what it's there for. If it keeps occurring daily, then we may want to check into isolating the apps being used right before it occurs, or check other troubleshooting, but this option is available and will be needed randomly for hiccups.

This is intermittently happening to me too.

I have the iPad Air 3 256GB and this just started happing after I downloaded 16.1.1

it doesn’t matter if it’s fully charged or not and regardless of charging or not.

I usually only have safari running but will pay more attention to what apps are running.

I usually have to do multiple reboots to get it going again.

I hold the home button and side button until it shows the Apple logo…but like I said, sometimes it just goes to a black screen again.

I can tell when it’s on because I can see the screen come on when I am in a dim room…if I am in a bright room, I cannot see when it reboots.

Thanks for your reply.

This is what happened:

The iPad was on the table as I was getting ready to have breakfast. I touched the screen and it woke up to the Lock Screen which showed a couple of email notifications. I did not touch the screen again but left it at the Lock Screen and walked away. It went back to sleep. It was fully charged with no apps running in the background. When I came back to the table to eat my breakfast I tapped the screen to wake it up. Nothing happened, it stayed black. Pressing the on/off button did nothing. It would not respond at all. Eventually I was able to get it going again by following the tap up volume, tap down volume, then holding down the on/off button until the Apple logo appeared. This actually took several attempts. As I have said I was worried that it wouldn't start at all.

Update, it just went to a black screen after it went to sleep…I had it plugged into a non Apple charger I have been using for several years…I performed the forced reboot procedure, left upper button and home button while still charging…same black screen, unplugged power cord and performed forced reboot procedure again, success
