First, determine exactly what model iMac you have. There were four 27" 5K Retina iMac models in 2017. They probably all use the same memory but it's best to check. Do <Apple logo> About This Mac and check what it says for iMac, Processor & Memory.

It is probably 2400 MHz PC4-19200 DDR4 SDRAM SO-DIMMs (260-pin). The default RAM in the 2017 iMacs was 8GB (two 4GB RAM DIMMs). You can increase it to 64GB.

There are 4 memory banks (slots) under a cover on the back of your iMac. Check this article for information about the RAM and how to install it: Install memory in an iMac - Apple Support You can install any combination of RAM (4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB up to the maximum allowed) but make sure that you install them in matched pairs in Bank0 and Bank 1; don't mix different size RAM DIMMS in the same bank.

Always purchase good quality RAM. I suggest Crucial or OWC. If you go to crucial.com you can have them run a scan and tell you exactly what RAM to purchase.
