WD19 Dell docking station can only mirror the display with 2 external monitors w/ a m2 macbook?

When using a wd19 dell docking station only one external display is detected. This results in two monitors being mirrored rather than extended. My dell laptop works just fine for the exact same setup. I was informed that the m2 chip can handle 2 external displays. I heard something about the wd19 not being thunderbolt or something so it will not work. I do not want to buy a different adapter or anything. Thanks

MacBook Air, macOS 12.6

Hello 360plyr135,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We'd be happy to get your questions answered.

For Mac computers with the Apple M1 Chip: You can connect a single external display to your Mac. Docks don’t increase the number of displays you can connect. On a Mac mini with M1 chip, you can connect a second display to the HDMI port. See the Apple Support article Mac computers with Apple silicon.

For more information, check this out: Use one or more external displays with your Mac - Apple Support

Also, the above link explains how to set up the displays as an extended desktop:

Set up the displays as an extended desktop

You can arrange your displays in any configuration to create an extended desktop. For example, you can set your external display side by side with your Mac to create one large continuous desktop.
Note: You must be connected to a display to see these options.
1- On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Displays  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2- Click the name of your display on the right, click the “Use as” pop-up menu, then choose “Extended display” or Stop Mirroring.

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Apple-Silicon 2020 M1 13-in MacBook Pro and Air and 2022 Apple-Silicon M2 13-in MacBook Pro and Air are extremely-capable entry-level computers. They can support the internal display AND an External display up to the previously unheard of size of the Apple 6K display at billions of colors. But only ONE in addition to the internal display.

This may not match the way older computers forced you to work, since older computers were not able to support a really large external display. But it is NOT a defect. The spec was available long before you could purchase the computer.

The Apple standard for its built-in hardware-accelerated displays, makes them suitable for full-motion video for production/display of cinema-quality video with NO dropped frames, and NO dropouts or partial-blank scan lines due to memory under-runs or other issues. This requires a hardware rasterizer/display-generator for each fully-accelerated display.

If you are ONLY using slow-to-change data such as spreadsheets, program listings, or stock quotes, there are some other solutions that can be applied to get a picture at far lower standards.
