Folder toolbar and path structure

Hi, I have two related questions.

1, The name of the folder is displayed on the toolbar at the top of the folder. When I point the cursor at it there is a brief delay before the folder icon appears to the left of the name. I often grab this folder icon and drag it to the "save as" dialog box to define the required path. The delay in the appearance of the folder when I point at the name is an annoyance. Is there a way to display the folder Icon next to its name?

2, I have two identical M1 Macbook Pros. I have iCloud drive "desktop and documents" enabled computer 1, which gives me access to the data when I am using computer 2. When I am on computer 2 and I right click the folder icon on the toolbar of any folder, it displays the path structure. The odd thing is that it displays the serial number of computer 1. Why is this happening? Is this normal? And if it is, what is the reason?

I am not sure about question number 2, as I never activated Documents and Desktop in iCloud; but I can answer question 1:

Go to System Preferences->Accessibility->Display and check "Show window title icons".

Question 2...

Apple > System Preferences > Sharing >

At the top you can change the name. You most likely have the same computer name because you mirrored the other computer during setup.

Important note: If you are on Ventura, the System Preference are now different. So you will select "General" from the side bar.

Hi Luis, Thanks for the quick response. I would never have thought to look for that check box under accessibility. It should be in the finder view options.

BTW, I love the iCloud drive "desktop and documents" feature. However, be warned, if you turn it on on more than one of your computers, all of the files and folders on your desktop will vanish and you will have to go looking for them under iCloud drive. If, like me, you keep your current work on the desktop, this will give you a headache and a lot of work to reverse. Anyway, thanks for the tip. The missing icon has been a long standing irritation. Another example of the triumph of form over function.

"If it 'aint broke, don't fix it." I tend to stick with an OS until the 'innovations' have been sorted. I went from 9.2 to 10.4 to 10.6 to 10.13, each of which, in its own way, was an acme of OS-evolution. I've only had to suffer the missing icon for a year when I bought apple silicon with OS10.12. I was very pleasantly surprised except for that missing icon and loosing a lot of legacy software.

Best wishes, Ronnie.

Hi Barney,

I finessed the screenshot because I was on the wrong computer, but it does not change the situation. I am now on computer 2 that does not have iCloud Drive "desktop and documents" turned on. No matter what folder I start from, the path leads to the wrong serial number. The attached screenshots are taken from computer 2.

I don’t understand why you are seeing a serial number at all. That’s not normally part of the host name. I have no idea how you would get it there unless you named your Mac with it.

Hi Barney, This is one I think I can answer. More than likely it comes from the profile on the the new M1 security chip and the "Total Control" software placed there by my employer. Of course I tried to disable it but it is not possible, it just reinstates itself. I don't think it is related to the fact that the file path on both computers point at the same serial number. I think that is caused by iCloud drive. I bet the names would resolve if I unchecked the Desktop&Documnts or signed out of iCloud. Back in the day I would have tried it but I've learned not to mend things that aren't exactly broken. I got the important answer to my first question, so I think we should let this one drop. Thanks for all your efforts. You've saved my bacon several times over the years.
