MacOs Finder CPU usage Very High,,,

Hello All/Apple

-

Just updated to Big Sur 10.7.1 on a 2014 MacBook Pro with 16GB of ram, and in the activity monitor the Apple Finder hogs 25-120% of my CPU usage...

-

I've tried the tips in this thread : Finder to 100% CPU - Apple Community without any relief:

:::

•disabled spotlight search

•new finder windows opening on Desktop (which now has no files or folders)

•unchecked the box "calculate all sizes" in the Finder "Show View options"

•deleted com.apple.finder.plist file

•reset SMC

•reset VRAM

:::

Why would the Finder be so heavy on the CPU ????

-

Each Finder window seems to make the %CPU jump with 10-20%,,,

-

If Apple hadn't been made my MacBook Pro obsolete for more recent MacOs releases, i would have updated my OS, but i'm quite stuck with Big Sur and therefore need to ressolve the Big Sur Finder CPU issue....

Hi aa-Paris,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand that Finder is running your CPU usage higher. To address this behavior, restart your computer in safe mode. Limited startup items are allowed to run here and a health check is performed in safe mode. If the issue continues in safe mode, make sure that you have disabled security software and create backup of your mac. Continue with a reinstall of macOS.

1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

You can find these details in How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Regards.

Hello ASTRO24

Thanks for your reply - i've tried safemode and,,, Will need to reinstall MacOS.

There are diverging opinions about what a "clean" installation is, and although the Apple migration assistant is really handy, i'm afraid i'll end up copying settings that will end up slowing down a new installation. Especially when i do not know what is causing my slow finder at the moment.

-

Not sure if there is an article on how to best perform a clean installation of MacOS, so right now i'll try to save my calendar, contacts, browser bookmarks and passwords, mailboxes and rss subscriptions.... And reinstall all apps. Might be overkill, but seems the "clean" way to proceed.
