ITunes Audio Skipping When Machine Is Idle

I seem to have this problem that just recently started. When my machine is idle with ITunes playing music, after an hour or so, the audio starts skipping! This seems rather strange, as I'm not playing any CD's, just music in my music library. I ran a diagnostic test, and it says that everything is fine except a "Library Error" with Ipods. I don't currently have an Ipod connected to my machine, a PC. I'm using the newest version of ITunes, 12.12.6.1. The skipping stops when I restart ITunes, but this really bugs the soap out of me, as it's never happened before. What the soap is goin' on?

Hi annabellefromor,

To help troubleshoot, ensure your PC and iTunes are updated, as software updates can help clear up unexpected behavior. Check out how to update here: Update to the latest version of iTunes for Windows 10 - Apple Support

If the issue persists, see if the behavior is isolated to your iTunes library by testing with a different library. See those steps here: Use multiple iTunes libraries on PC - Apple Support

"Create or choose a library

  1. In the iTunes app  on your PC, choose File > Exit.
  2. Hold down the Shift key while you open iTunes (go to Start, then choose iTunes > iTunes).
  3. In the window that appears, do one of the following:
    • Create a new library: Click Create Library.
    • Choose a different library: Click Choose Library.

You can name your iTunes library (the folder containing your iTunes content and the iTunes Library.itl file) whatever you like. For best results, if you create additional iTunes libraries, don’t name the new libraries “iTunes” or “iTunes Music”. Make sure each iTunes library has its own unique name so you’ll know which is which."

Let us know if that helps.

Kind regards.

I remember pressing the little reset button on my computer by accident, and the BIOS changed from UEFI to Legacy. Stranger still, my machine can't start without inserting the Windows 10 disk into my CD Rom Drive. When I restart my machine with nothing in that drive, it does this endless shutdown restart loop that just goes on and on and on until I insert the Windows 10 disk. I wonder if switching it back to UEFI would fix the skipping problem in ITunes. If so, is there a way to do this without having to reinstall Windows?

It certainly sounds as if you need to resolve the issue with Windows startup before worrying about iTunes. I would think that you can select UEFI boot and see what happens. You might still need to perform some kind of Windows startup repair, but if you switched away to Legacy from UEFI you almost certainly need to swap back.

The only problem with updating Windows is that compatibility is broken between drivers, programs, and my screenreader, JAWS. I have updated ITunes to the latest version, but the audio seems to skip after three hours of being idle. It actually sounds like what you would hear when pressing and holding the "Skip Forward" button on a CD player. It sounds like the audio is actually fast forwarding as it plays. However, when I restart ITunes, the problem goes away, only to come back three hours later. And the cycle just goes on and on! No matter if I restart my machine, it happens just the same. Funny thing is, it's never done this with earlier versions of ITunes. Better yet, it doesn't ever skip with programs like Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player, or even Audacity. Why it skips with ITunes is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy beyond me! What do I do next?
