Screen size when mirroring Macbook with HP monitor

I have a Macbook air year 2020 and I just bought an HP 24m monitor for work. I want to mirror my screen because I just want to have one screen that's larger than the normal laptop so as not to strain my eyes as much. But every time I mirror, all the sides are cut off, as in, I can only see half of the dock on the bottom and half of the Apple menu bar at the top, which is really frustrating. Is this because the screen sizes are different and can this issue be fixed? I've tried changing the resolution but this didn't help. Should I just buy a different monitor or is Apple incompatible with the rest of the world?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.3
