email not downloading content

My mail is not downloading content. There's a message across the top of there mail "Your network preference prevent content from loading privately" on the same plane is "load content directly" which then loads all content downloads.

I recently added a VPN, and I get this message when the VPN is INACTIVE, but content downloads when the VPN is active. How can I change the network settings, I have checked preferences and I didn't see any options for this

Hello dgillies_1,

This page can help to go over the Mail Privacy Protection on the Mac: Use Mail Privacy Protection on Mac - Apple Support

1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, choose Mail > Settings, then click Privacy.
2. Select Protect Mail Activity.

When this option is selected, your IP address is hidden from senders and remote content is privately downloaded in the background when you receive a message (instead of when you view it).

If you deselect the option, you can choose to separately hide your IP address and block all remote content. When Block All Remote Content is selected, a banner is shown in a message when you view it, indicating it contains remote content; you can choose then to download the content.

Note: If you turned off the option in Network settings to limit IP address tracking for your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network, your IP address isn’t hidden from senders when using the network.

This page has further info on the feature as it pertains to VPNs: If you see 'Unable to load remote content privately' at the top of an email - Apple Support

In some cases, Mail isn’t able to download remote content in an email in a private way. This may happen if you’re using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

You can tap Load Content to bypass the warning, and allow Mail to receive the remote content without using Mail Privacy Protection. If your device is using a VPN for this content, the content will be loaded through the VPN rather than through Mail Privacy Protection.

Cheers.
