Migration Question

I have a few macs , I need to do a migration of all information , Log ins and system software from my Mac Pro late 2013 to my Mac Pro 2019 8-Core. The drive on the 2013 is running out of room and I need the processing power of the 2019 as I need to make that my main work horse.

So with that written I was thinking about the best way to do so I figured I would migrate the 2019 files to one of my external back up drives, ( I have the room ) then do the same with the 2013 files.

Then wipe each disk clean and load the 2013 files to the newly cleaned mac 2019 drive and do the same thing with the 2019 files to the 2013 mac.

If there is a better way someone please advize. As I would use Carbon Copy Clober to get the files from the external drives to the main drives on both Macs.

If the users, apps & macOS are identical on both machines then all you should need to transfer is data files (docs, spreadsheets, maybe a photo library, etc.) You can do this easily enough by copying the relevant files to an external drive. (Although you may have problems if you want to transfer Mail or Outlook mail databases.)

I do not recommend cloning both machines to external drives, wiping both Macs and then using the clones to try to back-clone the 2013 to the 2019 and the 2019 to the 2013. Too many opportunities for failure that way. And despite the fact that both Macs can run Big Sur, I'm leery of whether or not you could successfully clone a 2019 Mac Pro to a 2013 Mac Pro, as there are major differences in the hardware between those two machines and it would be a regression.

OK revisiting this as I finally run out of disk space on my mac Pro 2013 and I eventually was going to do this migration anyway but here is the situation now.

My Mac Pro 2019 currently has Big Sur 11.6.2

My Mac Pro 2013 currently has Monterey 12.6

Now I want to take SOME apps and files from the 2019 and put on my 2013

  1. How do I copy / move the data files?
  2. Then move ALL the data and files from the 2013 to the 2019

I can upgrade the 2019 to Monterey so both machines have the same OS?

Just thinking out loud

any help???

thx
