ATI Radeon HD 5770 in MacPro 1,1

I've searched all over these forums, there was some talk about the ATI Radeon HD 5770 working in a 1,1 MacPro, but I never really found a definitive answer. In the apple catalog someone posted this:

"It should be fine ATI cards unlike nvidia are built to be compatible with both EFI 32 and EFI 64 interfaces and i know the 4870 is fully compatible even with the first generation intel mac pro some people were saying that the 5770 takes up 2 pci express slots but that is just false i havent had the chance to try it myself since my 4870 is enough for me but i am sure it should work just fine"

Any final word on this? I'm eager to upgrade.

To be honest I am not sure about running Leopard. When I was researching getting the card I found quite a few people that said that it worked fine under Snow Leopard and Lion, which it certainly does.

I did see that some running earlier OS would not get the grey Apple Boot screen but once booted it was OK.

Others reported issues of one kind or another but that may have been even earlier OS versions.

However 10.6 and 10.7 have the correct drivers and all is well.

In terms of a replacement for your X1900 its a very good alternative, but you may need to go to 10.6x to guarantee stability. My guess for 10.5x is that it will probably work but you may not get a boot screen.

I think if you go back to the top of this thread and follow it you will get an idea of the potential problems.

You must get an original Apple card though - some people had bought PC versions and they dont work as standard.

There is an alternative which is the Nvidia 8800 GT or GTS both work with the MacPro 1.1

Hope that helps.

Question to the people who have the official Apple branded ATI Radeon HD 5770: How is the fan noise?

I bought the Sapphire brand PC version of the card with the flashed firmware. The card is good, however whenever using flash or doing games, the ran runs very loud, at least more than what I think it should be. Granted, I switched from the stock NVidia heat sink only GPU, but I can't believe it should be this loud.

I'm looking at getting this very card for my Mac Pro 1,1/2006 2.66 from a local supplier that only carries one version of it for the Mac Pro. Everything I've read is FCPx and possibly some other video software needs a card that can support OpenCL and this is the only one that's made for the Mac Pro.

I've also seen a KB article from Apple saying that pre-2010 Mac Pro's may experience video anomallies when running the 5770, but didn't elaborate if that was related to driver issues. Granted, the article was posted last year, so maybe that was resolved with Lion.

Can anyone shed some light on if there indeed are issues with Mac Pro 1,1 running the ATI 5770 with 10.7.3 and will FCPx (10.0.3) have any problems with it?

Appreciate it.

Hi Brian

I have a MacPro 1.1 running both Snow Leopard and Lion 10.7.3 on seperate boot drives.

I have a genuine Mac version 5770 and it works perfectly. I have used it with FCPX, FCP 7

and Avid and it works well.

Compared to my X1900 card it is super quiet.

I think people were having issues pre Snow Leopard with things like boot screen not appearing. Also people

trying to run flashed PC version were sometimes having some issues.

These were indeed partly driver issues as before SL if was not properly supported.

However with a genuine Apple version and Snow Leopard and above mine works perfectly.

FCPX 10.0.3 is buggy and really quite poor but that is nothing to do with the 5770.

I have nothing good to say about FCPx. I still use FCS3/FCP7 and more often Premeire Pro CS 5.1. FCPx is just a mess. I'm curious though- you mentioned Avid. I tried a demo of Avid MC6.0.1 but it's not stable with 10.7.3 yet. Which version of Avid are you using? Any thoughts about how the 5770 will run with Premiere?

Until I decide on the 5770, I still have the factory instaleld Geforce 7300, which barely runs the monitors.

Thanks for the insight.

Along with the 5770 I have a Kona 3 which works with all 3 NLE's.

I use FCP7 on this machine by far the most and have no issues with the 5770 there.

Avid 6.01 via the Kona is basically very smooth in terms of simple clips on the timeline.

I use Avid profesionally and it feels as quick as the Avid Mojo or Nitris hardware.

However I have had a few spinning beachballs when messing about with the Colour Corrector and other FX. Its not perfect but then the MacPro 1.1 does not run a 64bit kernal and Avid is not supported on a 1.1 so perhaps not suprising.

I am new to Premiere but so far I have found it runs fine until you start using the Kona for output. Then it goes clunky and stutters and is not great.

To be fair I have not really used Avid or Premiere in anything other than testing and playing around with simple sequences and fx so nothing conclusive to draw from my comments other than generalisations.

How or if any of my clunkiness is related to the 5770 who can say, - however it runs very quietly, does not seem to get hot, and is pretty much the only upgrade worth considering as far as I can tell as nothing else that works offers any improvement or doesnt run FCPX or has other limitations.

In terms of running other apps outside of NLE's it seems not to miss a beat - I cant think of any issues. I run 2 24" Samsung monitors from the mini DVI ports and all seems fine.

The monitoring on FCPX is not great but drivers are still beta - I never use it I cant get on with the whole thing, in broadcast where I work it has been totally ignored - I dont know a single edit house or facility that has even considered it.

I recently bought the 5770 from OWC. It comes in a box that says APPLE with logo etc. It is an Apple card thru Radeon.

I installed in a Mac Pro 3.1 2008 & have major problems. Currently on my 3rd card. OWC has been nice enuf to exchange cards but my issues have not resolved over 3 months so they will no longer take card back. Other dealers have essentially same warrantys.

I like the graphics when it works but when Mac goes to sleep I can't re-open or re-power without removing the 5770 & replacing the original card. Currently just received 3rd card this wk & incident occured once; I'm removing other cards & attachments to troubleshoot with hopes it will be OK

I just upgraded my Mac Pro with a 5770 card so I could use the new Apple LED 27 Display on my early 2007 model. I bought both items from Apple. I have a friend who works there so I got a 15% from his employee dicount. The power plugs on my motherboard are in the upper left hand corner of the motherboard so you have to remove the hard drives to see them. So just plug into one of the two, plug the other end into the 5770. I put the card in the same slot the old card was in. This new card takes up the first two slots. The only other card I've put in was a USB 2.0 card for 4 more USB ports.

I put everything back together and presto. Everything is running fine, so far anyway!

I'm running OS x 10.6.8 [snow leopard]

Needing to install the ATI Radeon HD 5770 on MacPro 1,1 2006. At first attempt I could not find the connection place to connect the Power card to the Logic Board. So I reassembled all the parts and in researching the location — I found these most helpful posts.

Can any of you who have successfully installed this card tell me where to look? Do I need to remove more of the internal componets to access the place to connect the power cord?

Others here have asked this question and I may missed the answer but would appreciate your help!

I just installed the 5770 sucessfully 2 days ago. Looks like I have the same MacPro as you. What a difference! It's like a new machine.

The install was really easy. I put the machine on a table that was desk height, so I could see inside easily. You'd probably want a maglite or something small you can light the inside to see where everything goes.

Once you get the side panel off the tower, remove the old GPU from slot 1. You'll have to take out the 2 screws that hold the connection side of all the cards to the chassis - this should come out really easily. Then gently pull out the old card from the connector side first. I couldn't just pull it straight out, so I pulled on an angle from the connector side to get the PCI connector out of the slot. It sounds harder than it is.

Once you get the old card out, line up the 5770 and slide it in place and replace those 2 screws that lock in the connector side to the chassis.

The power connectors (2) are right behind the grey plastic, on the motherboard, about 1/2 way up. Use the small end of the power cable to plug into that side. Best I can describe is the power connector is black, and there's 2, one on top of the other. If you get a maglite in there, you can see it better. The 5770 I got had a diagram of where to look.

Once I got it plugged in, I connected my 1080p displays and it fired up the first time. No driver disk to install. Was really easy.

Hope that helps.
